Because the toy commercial meme is widespread so people look for the mecha anime that aren't the ones frequently called toy commercials. Eva also ruined the perception of mecha for a lot of people. These days a lot of people think all mecha anime before Eva were kids' shows with no redeeming values because they're not subversive deconstructions.
