They don't seem to like long running series. Most stuff they license is 10 volumes or less. The last time they did I believe was 2017's license of To Love Ru.

Some of the later volumes were translated by an ESL nip and badly need a fresh translation.
Based on comments they've made, the heavily requested stuff is almost always fully translated or just about there (eg Classroom Of The Elite). But the quality tends to be questionable like mentioned.
JNC owner mentioned he tried to license it. Japan wanted Shoji Gatoh's other works licensed first (Amagi Brilliant Park and Full Metal Panic). It's pretty safe to say JNC will get Cop Craft eventually.

Seven Seas somehow managed to license the Re:Monster manga from them. So they probably have a chance at actually licensing more.
The only good licensing company I've ever experienced was Del Rey, cause they actually bothered to use TL notes instead of catering to the flavor of the month crowd
Surprisingly Vertical has TL footnotes on pretty much every page of their Katanagatari release
I forgot Vertical, they're pretty alright too. But by and large, things getting licensed is always bittersweet for me.
Why they license such garbage?
What are the chances of Vertical subbing the Katanagatari drama CDs that came with the Japanese Blu-rays which is essentially the Katanagatari Prequel about Shichika's dad?
They touched on it at a con a while back. The light novel was highly requested so they approached Alphapolis but they refused. However they were surprised to be offered the manga. Getting anything from Alphapolis is rare so they went for it hoping they could open the door for more. So far they haven't been able to get them to budge but they keep trying.
It seems to sell well for them as they openly said volumes 1 & 2 had to be reprinted while Slime was releasing new episodes. Seems like people looking for other reincarnated into monster/object series were picking it up. (Also probably the reason they picked up Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita).
Even Japan hates alphapolis, they started the trend of telling authors they hire to take down their web novels instead of leaving them up.
It's a really strange publisher.

Doubt it's about Alphapolis. You see they weren't planning on licensing Mushoku Tensei LN as well but because of the anime adaption announcement were basically forced to.
More like trying to maximize profit nothing strange about it. Everyone on narou knows the only reason to buy an LN which was adapted from a narou WN with little to no changes is to tip the author and maybe grab the illustrations/physical version.

I think the LN still hasn't caught up to the WN, although I don't know how much changes. The WN doesn't seem close to ending other than due to the author not writing. I don't think the LN has gotten anything new recently either.
Gate still hasn't had a second manga volume in english, maybe that's related to why they don't want to bother.
Tsuki ga has the WN on alphapolis, so maybe they just want control of it? It's still not good if they are adding their own content restrictions, but I don't know if that happens.

Well, Atsushi Kaneko for example. They've had Matsumoto's Louvre Cats for years and in color too, they got Hiroki Endos vampire series... they've got a a lot of stuff that will never get released in the US.

Quite a bit more of serious shorter works and UG stuff that would be analogous with the western graphic novel format (and not just manga that's licensed in the west and has the "graphic novel" denominator slapped onto it) that are meant for comic enthusiasts. Too niche for most markets.

Bambi has been published in English years and years ago. The license has expired and I don't think they ever even did the entirety of it, but it did happen.
Yeah it was only two volumes. The series was licensed by DMG and they are notoriously one of the worst manga publishers in the US. They also licensed a bunch of big titles like Worst and only released one or two volumes, and in the last few years use Kickstarter to fund releases. The only stuff they publish that sells is gay porn

How much do Honhons pay for their tanks? In addition to American publishers only licensing shit that's either on Toonami/Crunchyroll/Netflix or very popular on Reddit and Twitter they also charge like double what a tank costs in Japan. Granted it's still a better deal than paying for an American comic TPB but still, paying $13 for something that costs like $6 in Nipland is dumb.

TLDR -> The fan surveys 7S does don't really lead to series getting licensed.
My scanlation team (which I still am a part of despite contracting with 7S) tried getting readers of our series to "survey bomb" so those series would get licensed. However, it wasn't until my point of contact at 7S asked me directly what series I had on my radar that one of those series got picked up. Just as planned, I got that same series to work on officially. So I got to work on it for you nerds and then get paid for it the second time around.
So about what the Japs pay for their stuff then. Holy fuck do we burgers really get raked over the coals by these shitty publishers. Fucking $20 for the Yen Press version of I Want To Eat Your Pancreas when the Jap manga is like $14 for both volumes.

How do you get professionally involved with translating manga in work like typesetting/editing? Is it more or less scanlating well enough that they contact you?
For 7S, I literally just sent them a small portfolio of my scanlation work via their contact form and said "Do you have an opening?" Took a while for them to get back to me and I had to do some test pages but it was that simple. Dunno how it works for other companies.

Some of the slayers translations are abolsute ESL trash, and vol 16 is untranslated.
Not really, I got Record of Lodoss War, which they went all out with the quality of the book, and the translation is fine as well.
Only problem with the True Tenchi novels was a typo or two.
That's the way things go for licensing in general. Ultimately, scanlations create a community around a series in a way that a bi-monthly volume release.
There's also the fact that they license many titles, the majority of which never had a 'community' to begin with. So you'e looking at a series that was barely discussed that becomes a series nobody talks about.

I'm honestly surprised those books have never been translated/released over here. Considering how much influence it's had on pop culture (i.e. a lot of darker supernatural horror anime and shit like Shin Megami Tensei) you think it'd be a no brainer for someone to pick up.

Doomed Megalopolis was published officially in English but shit's been out of circulation for years and years and casual, i.e. the profitable and largest, audience will know of it as often as casual audience will know who Rintaro is, so not very often.
If there's any hope you'd have to hope for actual literature publishers who'd be doing significant cultural work by translating it, and not manga/ln publishers. It's not unheard of of publishers picking stuff up based on well constructed arguments.
I want someone to pick up Owari no Chronicle so I can have it on my shelf but no publisher is gonna go out of their way to deal with it when it barely has any western fans
It's really a wonder why Joe hasn't been published in English. Literally one of the most influential and important series ever. Why doesn't Vertical do it? They're having a grand old time publishing all sorts of Tezuka titles, specifically the heavy shit like MW, Ayako or Adolf.

Tezuka is more well known in the west than Kajiwari and Chiba. You'd think when Megalo Box was new they would've done it since that seems to be one of the criteria these publishers use when deciding what to license and release (why do you think we suddenly got an explosion of Go Nagai stuff or the Space Battleship Yamato manga getting collected). The only other hope is to turn it into a meme like what vaporwavefags did with Urusei Yatsura since that's pretty clearly the only reason the series is getting published over here now.

Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e TL is great - it has literally everthing done right without garbage burgerization which is rather very uncommon).

Seven Seas is probably the best official publishers for LNs and second best for manga after Yen Press (yeah, they sucks really bad for LNs, but that's different department of them). Everthing other is nothing but piece of garbage (especially Viz and vertical).

For smaller creators stuff like this is honestly a great way for them to spread their name and works. There's a few series like Skinny Girl and Chubby Boy and I Can't Tell What My Little Sister's Friend is Thinking that are translated and put on Mangadex with the author's permission and all it does is basically work as free advertising.
Ranma 1/2 was one of the most popular series of the pre-Toonami anime fandom. Inuyasha was incredibly popular in the early 2000s. People knew who Takashi was yet there was in interest in publishing Urusei Yatsura until the series blew up on the internet over the last year thanks to vaporwafefags using it in their stuff and giving it attention.
I don't know what's offensive about the idea. A publisher isn't going to see any value in spending money on licensing, translating and releasing an old work unless they feel there's a market for it and getting very popular on social media/youtube means that the publisher thinks they might be able to capitalize on that newfound interest.

Wicked City, I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, Perfect Blue and At Night, I Become a Monster were all originally released as regular novels. They all had new editions released under a LN imprint which is the edition Seven Seas licensed. Generally the only difference is new cover art.
