Its a great manga if you just want some good old shounen

I'm a Japanese fan of the manga and it saddens me how unpopular this manga is on Yea Forums. It's easily one of the best shonen manga I've read and I rarely see a thread(which just dies without getting many replies anyways) about it here.

I was surprised how much I loved this manga. The main problem for me is I've never played Dragon Quest and it wouldn't always explain what's going on when it took influence from those games but I managed to figure things out.

I can remember the english spell names easily but when talking about dai no daibouken i use the japanese spell names

This manga did the battle shonen archetype perfectly. The power creep was constant but consistent and entertaining, all the way to the end.

They literally made a movie about playing DQ5 instead of movie about DQ5, the worst part is that the game has one of the best stories not only on the franchise but in video games.
They tried to pull the "games are eternal and yadda yadda" but that kind of mentality have been with gaming aficionados since ever, they fuck the chance of making a proper 3D DQ movie just to have a cliched and dumb twist at the end.

I read it a long time ago, and reread it recently. It's great and still holds up today.

Yes, here in Mexico it was called Las Aventuras de Fly (Fly's Adventures). I know that it was also big in Brazil, and he was known as Fly there, too.

I am currently reading it, I got to the moment where they started fighting Oricholcon chess otakus. It's dope as shit, what initially came across as bootleg Toriyama is able to perfectly stand on its own and even rival Dragon Ball in some aspects.

It was until the hiatus, it moves at a pretty fast pace, but now I dont know what is going on with the series.

It could, but I'd rather it be like DQ sequels where it takes place hundreds of years later in the same world. Dai's sword can become a legendary sword that heroes use in times of crisis.

But no, I can think of YYH Kuwabara, Ranma's Ryoga (because he trained by himself), but no other sidekick has ever gotten a character development like Pop as far as I know.

Kuwabara had the dimension sword but he wasn't even around for Three Kings Arc and all three were shafted for the sake of Yusuke fighting Sensui instead at the end of Chapter Black.

Meanwhile Pop had Medoroa which could have killed pretty much everyone in the series if they were hit by it, even Vearn in his prime body had to make sure not be hit with it, Sensui could be hurt by the dimension sword but it wouldn't annihilate his entire body.

That and Pop stayed until the very end while Hyunkel couldn't go any further. It's like seeing Hiei get the shaft in Three Kings Arc only for Kuwabara to fight instead of him.

Been a while since I read it, but there was a small bit in the manga where he and Maam met up after defeating their chess enemies. He told Maam to not worry about Pop's battle but she was clearly worried about him so in the end Hyunkel pushed her to go help Pop, with the complete bonus classic line "I cant make you happy"
