You're right, it would be much better if it was cheap propaganda appealing to your personal tastes and not a morally gray conflict.

It's edited like a documentary because it's meant to be a story that is being told from an historical perspective by the narrator.
The animation is very limited because it was a passion project made in the background through 10 years.
The audio quality isn't great because shit's old, but if you think the voice acting is bad then you're just retarded. It's full of phenomenal performances.

If you can't appreciate something that has such production quirks you're just too much of a spectaclebrain for this show.

Define better. The FPA put more resources into it's military per capita, which was more cost effiecient than the empire's. But they were fighting a war of attrition that favored the Empire. The Empire honestly seems like a better less stressfull place to live if you're able to keep your head down.

Dusty was pretty good. As were most of the admirals that were led to their deaths during the botched invasion.

Meanwhile conspiring nobles get away with killing all the Kaiser's relatives and making him feel that Annerose would be assassinated if he impregnated her by accident.

In Gaiden, they show that if someone reports you to the police for disrespecting the state, then the police will automatically assume that you're guilty. Most likely you'll be tortured to death, but if you're really lucky then you'll only be exiled to a forced labor colony for the rest of your life.
