This manga started to suck so much after Askelad death. It was mediocre to begin with but still enjoyable. After his death it went to generic "I am a pacifist cuck now" and obligatory wheat\rice\whatever growing arc. So damn sick of this cliche, its everywhere, same with vagabond and countless others. Their trip to somewhere else before Vinland is a joke, its such a cheap way to stretch the series and inflate chapters count. Story already don't have enough content and ideas, it became very weak, it would only get even more empty every new chapter. And the jokes is just horrendous, its nowhere near serious story, at this point it looks like one piece with gay vikings swimming on a candy sea to steal some sweets from local pirates and fight aliens.

It's true, Vinland reuses a lot from previously (and recently) seen manga and whatnot. Even so, many of it's "lessons" are always good to revisit.
The overall tone changed with his jrpg party and all, but this can be (and was) used to setup for new types of conflicts and interactions, which is what storytelling is usually all about.

In the end, it is still enjoyable, so stop bitching about what it isn't and thus acting like there isn't a single redeeming quality about the manga. As long as you like it, that's all there is to it. And if you don't, why are you even here.

Started reading the manga because waiting for episodes sucks. Askelaad is actually such a fucking good character. The manga focuses more on him than Thorfinn for majority of the chapters I've read, and I was surprisingly ok with that. The art is also fucking incredible. Half of the manga I read is indecipherable scribbles, but everything in VS is detailed yet clear. I'm mad at myself for not reading it sooner

According to wikipedia, Gudrid got penised a lot by her many husbands. That she acts like a teenage schoolgirl in love in a country that isn't totally worthless is strange.

According to wikipedia Thorfinn is a descendant of Ragnar Lothbrok. It should have been Ragnarsaga instead of Vinland Saga.

A character who has a grudge against Thorfinn makes perfect sense, the cycle of violence and vengeance and all that. This character keeping company like an albatross around his neck does not. It's redundant, for two reasons. (1) Einar, Thorfinn's friend, already exists to help keep him on the path he has decided to tread and has been more effective than Hild, and (2) the threat from Hild doesn't really have an impact on him besides making him feel guilty and more likely to throw away his life as recompense; the strength to stay the course doesn't come from the threat from Hild but from within. Thorfinn going back to his old ways would be the effective death of his character, as he would show he doesn't have the resolve to change; there is no need to hammer it in with a literal person threatening to end him if he wavers. Plus we know he could kill her ass if he wanted to.

Hild has a pointless existence, for now anyway. She needs to go through a similar development in character as Thorfinn and get a life.

While I don't think we will see her full backstory before the wheat arc. It is very likely that we will see Thorfinn killing her Father since we seem to be going chronologically anyway. And the average Anime Viewer will have no idea this is important but it will be a nice nod to manga readers.

She's genuinely and unironically fucking awful. The feminist pandering isn't even her biggest issue. That's bad enough, but at least the manga has enough of a semblance of historical accuracy as to not pretend as if "shielmaidens" and the luke aren't complete bullshit born out of historical revisionism rather than convincing evidence, and one could easily chalk it up to the author's preferences getting the better of him, but her being a brilliant engineer in the middle ages is hogwash on a level that actually detracts from the story's more or less grounded feel. She's not alone in that though, since the manga is in a general trend towards less realism and grit ever since farmland. Her greatest weakness to me as a character stems from the fact that she's superfluous in the dictionary sense. What's the point of keeping around a character to remind him of his past sins when the guy has legit panic attacks over them and has admitted himself several times that it's an incredibly uphill battle against himself and his world? It doesn't help that she's got basically zero motivations outside of reacting to Thorfinn, which makes her stale and passive narrative wise.

You know way back when I was reading the prologue I thought that Vinland Saga would be about Thorfinn going all the way down his revenge rabbit hole, emerging from that and being a raider still for a number of years until the weight of that eventually buckled him and he turned into something resembling his father. That that would be his impetus for going to Vinland. Then after arriving and struggling to survive in his imagined Utopia he'd have that illusion shattered. He'd leave behind both his murder hobo ways and the intractable idealism of his father to reach his own less naive morality.

Instead we got 10 years of him developing not one fucking inch.

attack on titan, the stories beats and some of the themes are surprisingly similar, the mcs even start with the same purposely shallow world view, the only difference is the mc in attack on titan develops in way that's actually interesting, and not just generic moraltard.

This is particularly striking in the confrontation between Thorfinn and Canute.
And no violence is never shown as anything "cool",you may see some fight scenes like Thorfinn and Thorkell's fights as "cool" but the aftermath of those fights and the background for them is anything but. The "cool" is something that comes from the characters,like Thorkell,who glorify the violence,not the story.

I would like to see her seriously endanger one of the others like Gudrid or Einar for jeopardizing her postponed revenge, and and then be killed mercilessly by Thorfinn as a special exception to his pacifist doctrine. That's the only thing that would redeem her hamfisted presence in the narrative for me.

Ok, ya boi's finally caught up. I have no fucking idea why Wit is making all these episodes about the Adventures of Blonde Shota, instead of just getting to the time jump. I would be surprised if they got to the end of the Askelaad arc at this pace.

In one of the interviews, the writer said that he wanted it to be more about Thorfinn.

I guess it's his work, but it's kind of disappointing imo. When I started reading it, I was little dismayed at how the story focused more on Askelaad than the blonde guy on the volume 1 cover, but I soon learned the importance of that arc. Thorfinn gets the focus starting from the slave arc and for the rest of the story, so I don't feel like the author deceived us.
On the other hand, if the viewers don't get more Thorfinn, they'd probably be less inclined to watch it and campaign for a second season, which would give them Farm Simulator Thorfinn until shit picked up.

I knew a kid named Thorgrid at my last job. He spent time in federal prison. He wasn't even Scandi, his dad was just obsessed with viking lore.
But I have heard from my Scandi ex that it's not uncommon to find people named Thor and Valkyrie, names we only find in stories or video games out here in the developed world

they used a patronymic system where the father's name was included into the son's name

I don't like her because she is some sort of guardian for Thorfinn's extreme pacifism ideology and stunts his necessary next growth as a human bean.

It's understandable that he would become a pacifist after his Edgefinn phase but he went completely overboard anime style to the point where he allows himself to be beaten to a pulp just to prove a point even if he could kill everyone else around him.

He should mature and realize that injuring and even killing someone in self defence is ok to protect himself or his rpg party, The Baltic Sea war showed some of this but very lightly so maybe that's the direction Thorfinn will go but that bitch is always there with her crossbow ready to kill him if he ever slips from his cuck fanatical pacifism he got in the Farm arc.

I don't know if that's where the manga is going even if it would be more realistic.

The only way this manga will be redeemed is if thorfinn goes to vinland and makes a village only for it to be raided and burned down to the ground, the point being that no matter what individuals do violence will always be a fundemental aspect of life. Would be TOP KINO
