Does anybody have any insight on what Anno has been trying to accomplish with these movies? Is he running Khara like a washed up band that goes on tour to make enough money off their cult of fans every few years when the bank account starts looking a little thin? Do you think him and Tsurumaki will actually take anime seriously again after they finally get out from under this garbage that they clearly have not passion for?

They put out Dragon Dentist two years ago and got conned by Nishigori into attaching their names to DitF but otherwise they've just been sitting back watch the industry consume itself from the sidelines. Its disappointing.

There doesn't seem to be any real goal. It started off as a sort of update/remaster but went off the rails and really just seemed to be whatever silly ideas that popped into his head. He probably knows at this point it doesn't matter what he makes, people will eat it up and knowing how much he hates his fans he probably enjoys fucking with them.

Originally it looked like he was going to make a "Shinji finally learned from his mistakes and did something about it" sequel, but Anno pulled and Anno and decided "No wait!, it's ACTUALLY about the 2011 Earthquake and Fukushima disaster!". That seems to have ran its course with Shin Godzilla, so I'm sure he'll change the theme yet again for 4.0.

I just hate that two extremely talented individuals and their talented cohorts have wrapped themselves up for over a decade making a shitty reimagined version of it rather than putting their talent to use to create anything new and exciting. It got its official western release via Netflix, the movie reboots (that would have been inevitable in this era of recycled content) will be over and done with, then hopefully it will be put to rest.
