I'll be frank, I don't follow the manga anymore ever since the series entered the hiatus hell. The only reason why I know about D. Grayman was because of Jump Superstar game for the DS, and the chapters were great back then when the author wasn't a frail fuck.

Hardly anyone is important at this point because of the incredibly slow pace it takes for the plot to progress. I'm all for the manga being quarterly to ensure Hoshino's health, but I'd be more fine with it going to a monthly format if it meant getting shit done. Waiting four months for an estimated 20-40 pages is a bit unbearable if nothing big happens. A fun fact: Lavi hasn't been seen in the manga in ages, probably close to eight years at this point. That's how bad it is.

The original anime isn't that good (also a solid half of it is filler because they caught up incredibly quick) although some of the fights are decently done and the music is good. Just stick to the manga but definitely be warned that it's now quarterly, so you'll be waiting ages for new chapters.

Yep, that was the case with a lot of the characters. A big chunk of it is filler, which is mostly disposable although I did appreciate they made a good bit of it go towards actual character development since the manga's pacing was a lot more faster.

He turned into an Akuma because of the Earl, the akuma egg implanted in him for the third exorcist project, and his own tragedy. the 2006 anime caught up to the manga very quick (around the Krory arc/beginning of the Edo arc) so they padded out the middle of the anime with filler, which was mainly there to develop side characters, which was hit or miss, but worked incredibly well with Suman Dark, who wasn't as developed in the manga. So, in 103 episodes, there's pretty much 65-70 episodes of actual canon material. Hallow is all canon and picks up where the original adaptation left off.

So what's even going on with the manga? I hear hiatus hell but what's that mean on like a scale from 1 to Berserk.

It's still active but 2-3 chapters a year with with no plot progression. The pacing makes it feels like a real hiatus.

To be exact, 1 chapter every 3 months with 20+ pages. And we're now entering Allen's past arc. If his past is faithful to the light novel with the current pacing, I expect it to be over around 2021.

This is kind of where I'm at. She's cute, and in principle the dynamic is interesting, but in this specific story there's not much actually going on. Road's interest is pretty shallow in relation to Allen, and it's mostly because of the Nea connection. Which is sort of Allen's problem at the moment, where he's finding out most of the relationships he cared about in his early life were all smokescreen and they were only with him because of Nea. Note, shallow doesn't mean not strong. Road is pretty obviously rather intense with Allen, but by shallow I mean her interest in Allen often seems to have little to do with anything actually about Allen but rather the aforementioned Nea connection and because she's an outrageous flirt.

Allen doesn't seem to have much particular interest in Road either, beyond his more general desires to help the human parts of the Noah.

I gave up on D.Gray-man a long time ago.
Hiatuses aside, "Disappearance of Cross Marian" arc was the last interesting arc for me but had severe pacing issues and then "Phantom Thief G" arc came and took a shit on everything, the art became too glossy, the pacing got even worse, the story started to hardly make any sense and each chapter had as many speech bubbles as it could fit which made everything even more confusing.

"Artificial Exorcists" arc is where i dropped it, everything wrong with the previous 2 arcs just kept escalating.

Honestly, if the only problem with the series was the super long and frequent hiatuses, someone would have remade the anime series, like they did with hiatusxhiatus, but the moment the hiatuses started, other problems appeared too and the manga lost its popularity.

The 30 mins I mentioned is specifically about Adrock Thurston and the Summer of Love and how Eureka came to be in Holland's care to begin with. As for how the film restructured things, it now made it that Renton had been in the care of the Beams following SoL (this is also because Axel's seiyuu has been dead for years, so Axel isn't in these movies).

Well, the major downside is aside from the 30 minute intro and some other shorter scenes, the Beams segment, etc. is a rearranged and edited version of the original anime. So, for example, some scenes were redone to accomodate the change in scenario. So, to tl;dr my response: we don't necessarily get more time with the Beams although they do appear in the SoL segment briefly. However, this has nothing to do with DGM, so I'll relent on this.

This manga is carried by the character designs/art and setting. The story begins as basic fighting shonen get stronger each arc and defeat new enemies with new final forms and allies, THEN it turns into a gay identity crisis saga with a predictable reveal (Mana Walker = Earl was really obvious ever since we saw the first silhouettes of the Earls true appearance) that gets dragged out for 100+ chapters. The story isnt bad, but its really 5/10.

Current time, Allen is slowly turning into the 14th, just being used by Marian, without masterminding anything.
And in the future, he is supposed to be the mastermind that used the 14th all the time?
