I really loved Yoshida especially back in second year. Kinda disappointed Nico hasn't developed Yoshida and Yuri's relationship. Even during the suspension arc Yoshida's character development felt very much like a side-note (the career thing with Mako). Also the fact that Yoshida suddenly seems to have a stronger bond with Mako than Yuri feels like a betrayal of the last few years, bordering on pandering. As for Mako, Nico has been a bit lazy because they haven't focused on her in a long time and are now pairing her up with Yoshida (not in a yuri way) as a quick and easy way to have Mako actually contribute to

It doesn't look like it but Yuri is in fact a really good friend to Yoshida, is simply that she's too socially inept to actually show it. These threads are night and day to what they used to be (referring to second year Watamote) and it's really draining to see almost all discussion being around the yuri aspects of the manga in contrast to before in which there was a wider appreciation for the other aspects of the manga. I don't dislike yuri as a genre but Watamote has definitely not transitioned to being a yuri manga and abandoned the rest of its foundations.

I still don't believe Tadokoro-san is a rip-off or inspired by Watamote. It would be far too surreal for Nico to shift focus towards Tomoko having a love interest as opposed to appreciating her last year in high school with her friends.

Even during the suspension arc Yoshida's character development felt very much like a side-note (the career thing with Mako). Also the fact that Yoshida suddenly seems to have a stronger bond with Mako than Yuri feels like a betrayal of the last few years, bordering on pandering.
I agree with this completely. Not leaving Tomoko, Yuri and Yoshida the main characters is probably the worst mistake Nico ever made in Watamote. If it's friendship that the manga is after, then these 3 had the best dynamic out of the entire cast and it was built up so naturally as well. It's a crime that they are no longer the focus as a trio. If it's yuri that the manga is after, then the physical stuff would have worked much better with Yoshida than Kato and the stalker with a crush stuff would have worked much better with Yuri then Emiri. Tomoko is already semi-comfortable with touching Yoshida, so in this hypothetical scenario, she could lust after her body without all the unnecessary drama that comes with Kato and it would also feel less forced. Same with Yuri. If Nico wanted to depict someone as more than friends with Tomoko, then Yuri is the obvious choice. Even now, YuriMoko has the most fan art despite the fact that they are clearly just friends. Also, Yuri becoming obsessed with becoming Tomoko's best friend to the point that she starts stalking her, is much better than the "Why aren't you actually stalking me? This is so disgusting that I'll actually start stalking you instead!" thing we have with Emiri. It's pretty clear that Nico is aware of this, but they are still pushing Kato and Emiri for some reason. So the only prominent question is, why? What could be so important about these two characters? What is Nico trying to build with them?

I was actually writing about how big her group of friends has become and how focusing on one group entirely wouldn't work anymore, but in retrospect, most of the friends she have are actually friends of friends. Are the two Yuris so different? I think the most we can say is that Nico haven't really finalized the personality of her character back in the school trip. I agree that she smiled a lot more back then, but she was always an aloof introvert that guarded her few friends possessively. I think the most jarring event back then was that she successfully mediated between two complete strangers, Yoshida and Tomoko. Well, you might think it's hard to imagine current Yuri doing that, but it's worth remembering that despite Yoshida being quick to anger, she was always very forgiving in the end. It might have looked harder to do what Yuri did, than it actually was. But even if she really did change, it wouldn't be the first time that a character changes for the better or worse, after coming in contact with Tomoko. Think about it, practically Yoshida is the only one who relatively remained the same in the whole cast, compared to who she was before she met Tomoko. I think the difference between the two Yuris mostly come from our personal bias of who we perceived her back then. She might have seemed like the sane girl stuck with two weirdos, but the truth is that Yuri was strange compared to normalfags as well, it's just that back then, Tomoko was even stranger. Yuri even acknowledges this with something like "Why am I stuck mediating between these two idiots? I am the one that needs mediating between me and Mako!"

She really wasn't. I mean yes in a sense Yuri has always been an angel, but the only reason she was "different" during the Kyoto trip was because she only had Mako as a friend. As she opens more with Yoshida and Kuroki we find out she's very introverted, reason why she manages to connect with Kuro, and later we find out she's a very jelaous girl when she and Mako hang out with Yuu.
She simply fears losing a good friendship with Kuroki who's getting more popular, especially with Asuka who likes to hoard her for herself.

I've never been a huge fan of her. I found "normal" Yuri pretty boring and current sperglord Yuri can get pretty annoying when they go all in on her lacking social awareness so she winds up coming off like a rude bitch. I'm hoping they have her start to open a little more to characters that aren't Tomoko/Mako/Yoshida while still being a sperg, that'd probably help a lot. Her walking home with Nemo during the suspension arc was a good first step.

I think she is different but it's easy enough to explain away using in-story reasoning. She seemed pretty comfortable after the school trip because she had this tight little group of friends that she was comfortable with which allowed her to loosen up more.
I think pic related is the exact moment where you can pinpoint the change in Yuri. She's talking and acting normally right beforehand, then everyone swaps around and she suddently shuts up and starts with the typical gloomy expressions for the rest of the chapter. She was comfortable with her four person group but everything's been changing and changing rapidly since that moment with the group expanding that she just doesn't feel comfortable which causes her to act like an even bigger sperg because she really can't/doesn't want to deal with it and just wants what's comfortable to her.
