Generally franchises like Yu-Gi-Oh and Digimon got tons of sequels that aren’t popular but still kept the brand alive just by existing

Unfortunately, they did two huge things wrong:
-made the main plot a monthly manga
-made the anime weekly with lots of filler arc
And both started off in the far future just to hype that things will eventually go bad

Ironically the only time people actually got interested is in a side character, Sumire since she was anime first

Split the team into two due to drama: Naruto fends off the Otsuki but is in a coma, the villain also survives but is also out of actuon, Boruto travels with the anime first characters to investigate the evil team while Sarada leads the old characters to try and keep status quo. Boruto orders Mitsuki to look over Sarada

I think that with Sumire they could have had an actual Naruto/Sasuke redux with a less edgy, female Sasuke that stays in Konoha, but I suppose they really wanted Sarada to fill that role already.

If it gets a spin off, it will probably be about the adventures of Gol D. Roger or some shit in the past.
