ANIMA revealed multiple things like Rei Q, Eva 02 going cat-mode, etc. all years before 3.0 came out. I don't think Yamashita pulled the Kaworu-Shinji shit out of his ass.

During first impact Adam cut off 'his flaws' so he could become perfect. Those flaws eventually came to be the being we know as Shinji, and the perfection that remained of Adam is what we know as Kaworu.
This is how ANIMA describes it, there's mutliple instances in Rebuild that show it will probably be the same in the movies too.

The situation is worse that all you imagine, Shinji is not the real son of Gendo and Yui on the rebuild lore, he is actually a direct clone of Gendo but with the non-human soul of Adam, and he's still not aware of it.

Oh, it doesn't even make sense in Anima. Kaworu's one appearance was as a voice that Shinji thinks is Kaworu, giving a line of supposition that doesn't account for EVA-01 still being of Lilith and unrelated to Adam, Shinji still having been born Lilin, or Shinji having been transformed by becoming EVA-01's core, then the voice shouts 2D4U and bails when Shinji starts questioning.

It's not bullshit, that's what happens in ANIMA.

As says, it's straight out of left field and contradicts the AU that Yamashita created, which is exactly why I think it's a plot point that will be revealed in Rebuild - or else where would he randomly come up with the idea to include that? This isn't even the first time he put in an idea that makes no sense in context with his story that would later be confirmed in Rebuild.

because all Rebuild are not completely thought out. Unlike the TV show, Anno here is proceeding by inventing things one by one. that's why 3.0 seems so disconnected from the other two movies. Maybe Anno was not satisfied with how the story was going and he thought it would be a shake to give viewers the same confused state as Shinji, but it is still clear that he changed the cards on the table when the game had already begun.

Yamashita is an ideas guy repurposing old concepts that didn't get used. Like upgrade modules for Evas, international tension about Evas, competing mecha projects, an evil boss Eva running itself and its own agenda, Unit 01 looking to Shinji who is himself being strangely affected by piloting while it decides how it wants to evolve, those were all things he wanted to do by 1995. It's more like Jon Peters trying to get a giant spider into any movie for a decade than like he's secretly telling a metanarrative about a made up cosmology.

You guys forgetting the interviews from the cast before Rebuild 2? I can't recall if it was Ikuhara who said it or not but they said pretty much the same thing, that Kaworu is basically a "perfect vrsion of shinji"

He's not attached at all. He's commented on Eva, but it was that someone told him there was a character that reminded them of him and that he wanted to see the blue one happy with a man and impregnated to troll the audience, he doesn't sound like he's seen it.

Anno himself said Kaworu is a perfect version of Shinji, way back in 1995.

She became extremely popular in the 90s because she was really the first character of her kind. There's never been a character like Rei before in Anime until Eva came along.
She had a lot of normalfag fans, but there was a very vocal minority of Rei otaku who were batshit insane for her.

They pissed Anno off because they basically ignored that she was a traumatized fucked up girl to make her an uguu submissive waifu, they made her a sex/moe icon.
Ikuhara suggested Anno make Rei get pregnant to some random dude in the last episode to btfo those otaku off and make them realize she doesn't belong to them, that the Rei they're thinking of is just a fantasy completely different from the show.

The SEELE childrens were involved on this third impact and Kaworu is probably not innocent knowing his bond with Eva mk06.
