Feels like to many new anime try to look like its filmed or something.
Instead of looking like it would look with your own eyes, everything gets a filter as if it was filmed.
This is what I cant stand with KyoAni Works. They animate it so well, then they put in a bunch of shit filters and depth perception.

I've always loved filtered photographs though. VNs that use filtered photos for backgrounds, ala the original versions of Higurashi and Umineko, feel so much more real and immersive to me.

I should have specified that I meant the characters and other animated objects, not backgrounds itself. I guess it also goes from show to show, nichijou do not have this problem, while VEG certainly do.
But in the end its all taste based.
