The main girl has a different name, so I don't think it's just a straightforward prequel. SS could be some kind of allegorical headspace or a literal virtual simulation made by the sister, for coping with Yocchan's death (and Shimeji's just a name for Mina's persona in it). Definitely have to keep our eyes peeled for any and all nods towards that comic though. It's fascinating, and I'm convinced the SS world has some secret to it.

Well SSR already has an anime adaptation and her voice in it and Chii's voice too was honestly perfect for the character, very cute. I'm not sure if SS anime is ever happening, even if it did it would probably be in a few years when there is more material, but if SS anime ever happens it would make sense to use the same VA as in SSR.

The taters aren't the actual taters from SSR, they are simulated copies created by AI-chan after she met the taters.
The poetry written in binary AI-chan refers to in SSR is actually the code of the simulation.
In the end the simulation will be destroyed and everyone inside it will die.

Yep, the only problem with this is that it almost seems too obvious right now. Also, since the simulation can work on a different timescale, the entirety of SS could take place during that one chapter of SSR.

I don't really see what value to the story it being a simulation within the SSR world would bring, when the series so far seems to be about coping with Yocchan's death and learning to love life again.

Also the linked electric poles are totally a metaphor about Shimeji's expanding circle of friends and the connection she's gonna grow to have to them. They don't have an apparent grander purpose but they exist for and because of each other; they connect to their neighbor and that gives them a meaningful purpose.

I think it's a way for tkmiz to explore the idea of God/predestination/fate, a theme which wasn't in SSR. It might still be about finding happiness under those conditions and whether it could ever be worthwhile since it's not "real" the way SSR was.

It might be worth waiting a year or two and binging a larger set of chapters when it will likely have more direction and the setup's done.
Though reading it seems you might just not relate enough to the apathy and sehnsucht that tkmiz likes to tackle to find it interesting. Shimeji's far more mundane compared to GLT so if the exploration and wonder was the appeal there's probably not a lot for you here.

I just had a thought: maybe the I-beam forest was a gigantic runway? The city civilization could have used ridiculously huge transport airplanes for shipping between the megacities. At some point in the war, millions of surplus I-beams got airdropped onto the runway to make it useless. The way I see all the weird, abstract architecture and layout of everything is it's supposed to be unexplainable to the viewer because it's unexplainable to Yuu and Chii as well. Both us and them were not around during that civilization and know absolutely nothing about it or how it even functioned. It's kinda like introducing a caveman to a computer or something. Probably what I like most about it actually. It might have been a runway or an area getting prepared for construction or even some kind of fucking art exhibit or park and the civilization could afford to dedicate that much area to it because they were just that advanced and powerful.

The series hasn't really done direct continuations of chapters so far, but it does tend to follow some logical cause and effect between chapters. Based on tkmiz's twitter panel, it seems like the premise of the next chapter could be about Majime bringing Shimeji's homework over after school. Since she runs into Shimeji's sister, and she seems to be working, we might, at long last, get some sort of concrete information about her research.

I actually think tkmiz is super talented and really sort of has something to say, as opposed to just being a normal guy who just draws manga to make money. He is really a genuine artist in the classic sense of the word.

i agree my only problem is i wish he would put more polish into his work sometimes, he can keep the same potato head style but cleaning up the line art so it all looks tidy and the colors and anatomy looks nice wouldn't hurt for him to do

I disagree, I think the "rough" aesthetic is a part of the charm, I wouldn't say it's because of lazyness, it's a stylistic choice. Personally I really like it, I don't know why, but I feel like it manages to convey emotion better than most "clean" art can. Though this is obviously subjective.

I like it this way. The scrappy look fits the characters and their circumstances very well, and the little human imperfections in the line work makes everything feel more real and lived-in.

I strongly prefer the line art, it's just his style and makes his work unique. Everything feels frantic, as though his mind is full to bursting and the lines spurt out onto the page at breakneck speeds, they have no choice. The art isn't, it just does

The fascination with death and the contradictorily depressed yet hopeful nihilism all speak to me in a weirdly personal way. It's like tkmiz knows more about me and understands me better than I do myself. Strangely relatable and seems very deliberate and determined in what to say with the art and stories, which I always appreciate in creators. The charming artstyle is just icing on the cake, really.

If you study tkmiz art enough, it becomes clear they've got strong art fundies. Line control and knowledge of form are all top notch, and backed by a good eye for composition, perspective, and design. The squiggly lines and general deformity of things are very much a deliberate style choice.

I agree, I think the taters would have gotten along with the Stalker pretty well. I think Chii might be hesitant about going to the Zone, but Yuu would really want to go to the Room and Chii would be willing to go anywhere with Yuu. I'm sure they'd have some good pure wishes, not like porcupine(or whatever they called him in the english subtitles).I know it's not Yea Forums related, but I love Stalker so much, it's honestly my single favourite piece of art ever.

Intentional or not, I do consider SSR an adaptation of Stalker. The upper floor = the Room. They made it inside, their intentions pure, and so their wish was granted.

Whilst there are some similar themes, and the upper floor is very much like the Room, I think it does still have many differences, and I think calling it and adaptation would be taking it too far. For example the main characters are nothing alike, the idea of faith isn't really brought up in SSR, also in Stalker, the Stalker longs for the Zone, he wishes to come back to it, it's escapism from the miserable world he lives in, in SSR the taters don't voluntarily live in an post-apocalyptic world for escapism, they didn't choose to live in their world, they are just making the most of their hopeless situation i.e. "getting along with hopelessness". I think the taters want a regular life, and on their travels they end up doing many things people do in normal lives, despite living in the wasteland of a city (they drink alcohol, they smoke, they encounter art etc.), the Stalker doesn't really want a regular life, his wife tries to convince him to stay home, not go to the Zone, live a normal life, but the Stalker feels alienated by the regular world, so he seeks the supernatural Zone. I don't really think you can call the end of Stalker either a happy or sad end, it's just what it is, but if we were to consider SSR and SS as a part of the same canon, then the taters got their normal calm lives in SS, withour the problems of survival, without the starvation, the pain and the hopelessness and that makes me very happy.

Let's not kid ourselves, anime series these days rarely are impressive visually and are pretty much always inferior visually to the manga.
Honestly I really liked the SSR anime, visually it lacked that tkmiz style (other than the ED that is)at least we still got potatoe heads, but to me it justifies its existance by having something the manga couldn't have, the audio, the soundtrack and the voice acting in the anime was amazing and I'd be willing to go as far as to say it was pretty much the best it could have been. Another big plus is that it was an almost direct adaptation of the manga, so the story/writing was excellent, and visually it was still pretty good. For me the worst thing about the anime is that the story ends pretty abruptly and you don't get the closure of the ending (I know the manga hadn't ended yet when the anime was being made, but a season2 or at least an OVA would be nice, though I realize that will never happen)
If i were to put it simply I'd say SSR manga 10/10, SSR anime 9/10, Stalker movie 10/10, Stalker vidya 9/10, I haven't read Roadside picnic, but I plan to.

It never was better though. Despite everything I said, I still think SSR looks better than about 95% of the shit that came out in the 00s, and it doesn't really get any better if you go a decade further into the past (unless you delve into the OVA territory). I'm not even asking for a replication of tkmiz' artstyle, that's obviously impossible. Give the work to a talented director (Oshiyama would be interesting) and the result will be completely different.

It was as good as it gets without killing tkmiz by making them do every frame by hand.

And to add to the point about the budget - look at Shaft's works in the previous decade. They made ambitiously great-looking anime adaptations with a budget that probably consisted of 2 moldy pizzas.
