Turns out that yes, a fucking bomb killed the king. That extremely simple assassination ploy would have worked; though maybe the hunters considered and discarded it because not any bomb would do and I doubt anyone thinks about outright using nuclear bombs. The King barely survived a nuclear bomb so I assume any regular C4 would do shit against him.

Gon's character interests me. Normally one would have resentment, or at least indifference, toward a parent who not only abandoned them as a child, but doesn't want to see them as a teenager.
Gon's different though. Not only does he still want to find Ging, he becomes a hunter because "Wow! if my dad is willing to abandon me for it, being a hunter must be amazing!"

He was intrigued and fascinated by the overglorification of his dad by Kite compared to Mito. And that of hunters. He doesn’t see himself as being abandoned. Because Ging was a great man. And that’s because Kite told him that. Ging must have had something better to do. Already, this tells us that Gon can only see the parts that interest him the most, a core facet of his character arc. The reason for this curiosity being that he was raised on an island with no playmates or buddies, only animals.

But interestingly, Gon doesn’t abandon the cub. He didn’t leave him behind to be grown up on his own. He was told he was taken custody of only later, but he understood that he was left behind. He didn’t want to be alone, like the cub. Which is why Gon is different from Ging. Ging chases his dreams and forgets about everything else, but Gon has difficulty leaving behind things (like KMito, the cub which grew up, and later Killua etc).

if Meruem lived he would be too powerful in relation to other characters. The reader would beg the question, "why didn't they just call Meruem?" in their frustrations. Like what happened in One Punch Man. Hunter x Hunter doesn't get written in a way that leads to anti climaxes so he had to go. As a result, we got a bittersweet self-contained story that is more memorable because it didn't carry on for any longer than what it needed to, in order to say something.

Basically this and I am glad that Meruem died. He was a good villain but after all the shit he had done, he had to go.

When I watched this for the first time I think I was sitting in a public space. I was ready to be proven wrong, but I wasn't. I watched Meruem's final moments. I couldn't hold back the tears. My lips were quivering, probably made an ugly expression, tears ran down my face. I was totally engaged in my environment. I remember thinking that this is the most alive I felt in a while and that i shouldn't forget this moment.

When I saw Meruem and Komugi holding hands that is when I just broke. I thought I was done but I wasn't. I never thought of myself to be so involuntary with my emotions. His story taught me a lot.

Reminder that the Succession War arc is the most complex arc ever made in the literal sense of the word, with countless interconnecting plot points, factions, and details. That has been successful in sturdily establishing not just the divergent princely factions but the fact that even within those factions, there are many guards and servants and retainers who retain legitimate agency. An arc about political maneuvering and indirect actions, where information is absolutely crucial, as well as leverage and diplomatic measures. Like a proper political thriller. There's nothing else on its level in manga.

We don't get Cammy's internal thoughts so she seems clueless to the surface level reader, but upon closer inspection it's clear she knows what she's doing. For instance when she asked Nasubi about the rule of "death", it was a reference to her Hatsu and she was trying to gauge how she could utilize it in the war. When she kept speaking in third person, it was deliberately to agitate Benjamin. She is one of the few princes who already knew Nen and her bodyguard setup is the most powerful on the ship. Her attacking him will follow the same pattern. It seems nonsensical at first glance but it was part of her plan; this line even foreshadows that

I don't think she's acting in a way to lower people's guard. Much like how she just waltzes up to people in full zetsu, she's pretty up front with her provocations and that's not a good thing here. I'd imagine someone with more experience would know when to switch on zetsu at the last moment to maximize the damage they take and ensure death for their ability to activate. Tserriednich is working towards this sort of instant zetsu for his own hatsu so that shows me how deep Camille has studied into nen combat.

A King dies of poison. Someone powerful is killed unconventionally. And its also the case that powerful entities in a story are separated from main events to increase risk in the plot. Both Meruem and Alluka's stories aren't being told as of the current arc. It's a common trope. I admit that I don't know what Togashi is thinking. His tragedy was probably a good enough reason to kill off, I agree
