Technically it's not Taiju's fault. There are two major improvements: the introductions of new characters and the change of narrative. In short, it's the change of goals from a long term one (recreate civilization) to a short term one (making the villagers allies) with a lot of checkpoints along the way (every villager befriended feels like an achievement). Pretty sure the adaptation deals are made with with the publisher, not the mangaka directly. No idea how much of a say they have on the production either, I imagine that at most they provide extra information, and they might have the final say on things like character designs and such, but it probably varies.
