If there's ever a discussion about whether a character in BnHA is queer or not there's a common argument against it. It's a shonen manga meaning even if the creator wanted characters to be queer they couldn't be. Shonen Jump would be too afraid of the media backlash it would get. So why get your hopes up for something that will never happen? This argument ignores the many ways creators have represented LGBTQ+ people. Even if the media and the publisher at the time were against it creators have found loopholes to go against them. This post will show a few examples of how creators dealt with this and how big a part it played in they're work. You may notice that one of the writers isn't Japanese. The point here is how the writers showed queer characters when the public was against it, even if those writers weren't specifically Japanese. The first example is HunterxHunter where Alluka is implied to be trans. This is done subtly enough that Shonen Jump let it happen. The only hint we got was the Zoldycks using different pronouns to refer to Alluka then Killua. Togashi never directly confirmed this leaving other possibilities open. The next is The Legend of Korra ending spoilers This is the most common depiction of queer characters. Leave everything purposefully vague and then once the show is over confirm the audience's suspicion. Finally, a JRPG game called Tales of Zestria. The main character, Sorey is implied to be in a relationship with his childhood friend. He isn't given any other love interests and there are a few suggestive scenes. The creator Hideo Baba hinted at this by listing of all the characters Sorey couldn't be in love with and calling the friend his beloved.
