Telegraphing and setting up big reveals is the exact opposite of an asspull.
His "death" only serves as a catalyst to introduce all the explanations/philosophical stuff in this chapter.
Just because things dont go your way, and go the obviously telegraphed way that everyone expected, doesn't make it bad or an ass pull.
