The anime was great until the final 3-4 episodes where they ruined any maturity and subtlety of the themes portrayed so far and dumped them all in an exposition dump of psychedelic still images, effectively insulting your intelligence, as if you didn't pick all that up before.

It's probably just Yea Forums's contrarian soul, but Evangelion was just as good as it was hyped up to be, maybe even better. The fights were great, I enjoyed the characters and their interactions with each other, the music was memorable and a joy to listen to, the animation is pretty when they aren't memeing with stuff like the elevator scene (which was a great scene nonetheless), etc. The best part about Eva was its themes, for sure though. They were conveyed in such a great and impactful way. Everyone should be able to relate to what Shinji or Asuka or the other characters felt at least to some extent, at least once in their lives. What are you talking about, Eva has a really cool mecha concept. Instead of just a large robot made in a factory, they are giant humanoids covered in armor and the armor are just restraints so the pilot can control them. There is always the risk that the Eva can go berserk and act on it's own. When Evas get damaged you see the actual humanoid inside instead of just machinery in a damaged robot limb.

First run through I related a lot to Shinji when I was still a teenager, but now after growing up, living life and realizing what is important in life, I rewatch it and mostly just sympathize with a lot of the character's as they remind me of bits of my old self. It's good to be able to reflect like that. Kaji is actually the reason I started gardening and now I have a nice raised bed outside my house with eggplants, tomatoes and herbs growing.

One is a character study, the other a plot-driven science fiction story. Even the references are polar opposites to each other. While NGE is an homage to the mecha genre, which is why it houses hundreds of references to run-off-the-mill super-robo shows, RahXephon focuses on western literature and art, building its narrative foundation on European short stories, paintings, pseudo scientific research and operas.

In conclusion: They are fundamentally different works and are rarely even compared by non-newfags. Wouldn't be surprised if they are such polar opposites because ChadZubuchi got married early and was still able to be an otaku despite that, while Anno stayed a virgin until his 40s. Imagine being Anno and listening to Izubuchi about his happy family life during on of their weekly drinking sessions. Must have been painful.
