Bebop was pretty popular in Japan. It's just relatively unique and twenty years old at this point, so if you compare it to an entire genre or long-running series, of course it gets discussed less.
It's also "artsy", in the sense that it ended where it ended very intentionally and didn't leave much room for spin-offs or a continuation.

Because Japan already got their own favorite gun-toting, wise-cracking protagonist that doesn't have B-movie tier plot tied in.

I don't agree with it but a large proportion of Yea Forums's been shitting on Cowboy Bebop for nearly 15 years now. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that it's a beloved anime by normalfags so elitists and gatekeepers pretend to hate it or nitpick it more than it deserves to keep normalfags with entry-level tastes out since discussions of popular classic anime tends to turn into an echo-chamber of the same discussions for decades on. Most of the people on Yea Forums who criticize it harshly probably don't actually hate it or care about it much.

I don't know, maybe I don't get all the subtexts but the overall plot is just forgettable as hell to me. I can only remember its good animations or some good cinematography here and there.

The elitists attitude of Yea Forums in particular is pretty baffling. It feels like it's more prevalent on this board than any other (at least the other boards I go on). Sure, we all have those popular pieces on entertainment that we don't care for, but people going out of their way to try and discredit something just because it's popular is weird to me. Entertainment can be both popular and great, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

There's quite a few anime out there referencing it. The last that comes to mind is Space Dandy. I'd say it's quite fondly remembered in Japan.

I always forget that it had problems with censorship too.
It initially was broadcasted in TV Tokyo but the TV Station deemed it too violent to air so they had to cancel 5-6 episodes in and find another TV Station that was willing to air it.

They eventually aired the whole thing from the beginning in Wowow which I'm sure meant a lot of loss in viewership and ratings and such.
That has to be a pretty big factor which people don't really take into account.

Forgot to mention that Wowow was a Premium Channel as well which meant you had to subscribe to it.

It was the best selling anime of 1998 in terms of home release sales, and that's just one factor. You also have ratings, pachinko stuff, merchandise, music, the film, references, etc. It's not as iconic as it is in the West, but it's not like it's some obscure "hidden gem" or "it got ignored by Japan but us superior Westerners discovered it" series (quite the contrary in fact). Anecdotally, when I visited Japan a few years ago, Bebop ads were still common in pachinko parlors, so it must have had at least some kind of lasting impact.

Red Eye makes Vicious well more Vicious. Julia has an affair with Spike and both try to escape before Vicious goes completely insane. Vicious finds out. Has Julia set up Spike for the shoot out at the church. Spike goes along with it knowing if he doesn't Vicious will kill Julia. And that's what I've pieced together from episode 5 and the ending credits.

The problem is that Prince of Darkness was meant to be part of a series of movies, but financially flopped in a way that killed the Franchise.

Nadesico PoD has one internal problem and one external one: those being that it ends at a point where you're supposed to have played the game to fully understand (even though the game hadn't come out yet at the time) and it's very bad for dumb self-inserters. That's it.

Just because they don't obsess over it like America doesn't mean they hate it. It's just another really good show to most people who have seen it.

You know what I really disliked about Cowboy Bebop? The ending.

All throughout the series, Spike says he's looking back at his past. He has nothing to hold onto. Not even when he meets Jet, Faye, Ein, or Edward. Even EDWARD suddenly up and leaves the Bebop because she has 0 personal connections with anyone onboard to stop her from doing so.

It's like everyone aboard the Bebop are just perfect strangers, which really irked me. And then, towards the end, when Spike goes to the final confrontation with Vicious, Faye realizes the Bebop and everyone aboard it is her family. She begs Spike not to leave, because she knows he's gonna die. And she comes to that heartfelt realization too damn late.

Does Spike give a shit? Nope. It didn't even look like Spike gave that much of a shit when JULIA DIED. He had a more visceral reaction to accidentally being called Vicious than he EVER HAD TO WATCHING THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE DIE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.

And in the end, Spike selfishly goes off to die.
