Gets pushed hard by Shueisha for years

>gets pushed hard by Shueisha for years
>get crossovers with one piece and dragonball
>anime was cancelled and manga sales weren't that high to begin with nosedived in the second half of the series
Why couldn't it take off with so much support? Never made a mark. Most readers probably forgot toriko ever existed.

good

Because it just wasn't that good

Because Toei went full 4Kids mode with the anime.

Too manly for kids

not enough lolis for degenerated audience

Shit anime.

The anime wasn't good especially with changes it made to the story and the fact it censored the hell out of the fights. The manga was enjoyable but rushed too many plot and stuff about the other continents. Also the series tried to compete with Dragonball and One piece. That was their biggest mistake from the get go to try to push it against these two.

It was kinda funny how one day they just switched Ichigo for Toriko on all the Jump covers. People cry about today's Jump pushing, but Toriko was the real push, no other anime can compare.

It was never trying to "compete" with them. As an anime it had a timeslot right before OP which was inherited from DBKai. They even had cross-overs. It was cooperation, one was meant to boost the other.

They tried to make it the next One Piece while One Piece is running when it was closer to HnK and Kinnikuman
They should've aimed it at 80'sfags instead

Well they fucking failed with that coooperation.

>Why?
-The characters were all muscular alphaCHADs and 2000 betacucks felt insecure about that;
-No underdog protagonist;
-Not enough loli shit;
-Not enough shitty porn fanservice;
-No forced female protagonist;
-Too few battle per chapter.
Today's market is oversaturated with the shit listed above. Toriko died for our sin.

It didn't fit the current frame work for the shounen. Buff guys with decisive characters, goofy characters with borderline creepy designs, and basically no fan service girls. They even had to add some "anime original" news girl to the anime, to make it more palatable.

Personally I loved it. Great sense of adventure and exploration, but it doesn't the current era I guess. Probably would've done better in the 90's.

Attached: we're already outside.png (900x1300, 389K)

>Probably would've done better in the 90's.
so much this, the industry has shifted so much since then

There's a lot of reasons why Toriko didn't do well but none of them were in your post

It does have a 90s feel to it especially with characters relying more on moves than actual transformations to win. Hell some parts of the art reminded me of Fist of the north star.

Toriko was too good for this shitty low testosterone hobby.

>t. pedophile

I haven't read Toriko, but the looking at the designs, I can guess it fails because it looks like an 80s-90s battle shonen.

Modern Shonen has abandoned the fights in favor of needlessly complex strategies just too look smart. Strong Protagonists like Goku, Toriko, and Kenshiro make viewers feel inadequate because they can't relate to a strong hero.

More like realist

>Strong Protagonists like Goku, Toriko, and Kenshiro
Goku and Kenshiro still get new modern installments. Luffy is still the most popular character in One Piece which has no real strategy in fights whatsoever. Toriko just didn't do well.

Bleach's anime was cancelled while Toriko was new. It made perfect marketing sense.

Why is OP still no 1 then? The most complex stratgey luffy has is punch it until it is knocked out and occassionally find a way to rest to recharge his strongest form.

Fist of the North Star, Dragonball, and One Piece are so over the top that very few people take it seriously. Toriko copies everything from those series and doesn't do it's own spin on it.

One Piece Prints money

Let's not pretend the last arcs from Toriko weren't rushed as shit.

It's bullshit. Naruto with the time moved more towards power levels as the time went. Bleach doesn't have much more strategy, if characters are to be shown as smart it's through lolscience, Ichigo in particular was really thinking in one fight and he lost it (versus Gin). And they were coming out throughout most of Toriko's run. I don't really read new shonens, but I've never seen people praising BC or MHA for its strategic fights.

One Piece is still 80-90's. Basically what happened is that the series that were popular kept their fans, and end up being regarded as classic series.

One Piece is ashounen that the whole family could be interested in watching. The wide audience keeps the series alive.

best post

One Piece doubled it sales in during Marineford war which maybe didn't have nonexistent strategy, but it surely wasn't complicated and far from the most important thing about it. Your point is really bullshit, stop trying to twist the reality.

OP isn't about the fights either. Literally no fights other than the boss of the arc last more than a few pages. It's just general adventuring and gags and shit

>the sales doubled during the huge crossover event that the series has been building up for about a decade
IMPOSSIBLE

What are you even trying to argue here? The point is that modern shonen audience is far from caring only for strategy and disliking pure strength show offs. Whitebeard was all about the latter. I think the only tactics he employed was hiding additional ship underwater.

A big thing that Toriko lost out on, is that there is no female interest.

Even without the flagrant fan service in current series, most successful series at least had some kind of female interest.

Dragon Ball had tons of ecchi comedy. One Piece has it with Sanji. Even Fist of the North Star is about Yuria.

Toriko doesn't do ecchi or serious love interests. It's almost all men (with some homo undertones), until Sunny's sister gets involved. And even then most of the series, she's brushed off as a joke.

Attached: the taste of a homo.png (1280x800, 810K)

No they didn't, they failed by making the anime so shitty. If the anime was actually good Toriko would still be airing today because the manga is fucking awesome.

That wasn't even gay, it was an obvious, direct reference to JoJo part 5.

Attached: Yuichiro_hanma.png (532x875, 572K)

>but it surely wasn't complicated and far from the most important thing about it
I never said it was complicated, rather the opposite?

People have enjoyed One Piece for a fairly long time, and unless something catastrophic happens, that won't change. It's also a series that you'd show your kids with no problem. Thanks to this the fan base will only grow. It's a series that can appeal to multiple generations, that's why it's popular.

>gets pushed hard by Shueisha for years
>get crossovers with one piece and dragonball
Uh, yeah, this was actually part of the problem, not an indication of popularity. It was getting these crossovers in it's early years, not after a long time of being popular where it would deserve it.

I think its also cause toriko was full of world building meaning fights were pretty spaced out
But I honestly think that worked to toriko's benefit to differentiate it from all the other battle manga. As much as you want to shitpost about toriko being a failure, in japan it must have been huge considering how long the manga went on for.
If you read the manga you'll see a lot of the foods are fan submitted ideas which must have been fucking awesome to see one of your designs get in so it probably had a really dedicated fanbase.
Though by the end you could tell the author was getting exhausted and clearly started to rush and skip things, in the volumes the author kept talking about how tired he was, how he wanted to go back to gag manga and that he couldn't believe toriko went on this long

It definitely is a JoJo reference in that scene, but Sunny alone did plenty of homo suggestive things.

Not that I didn't enjoy them, but having no female interest is like shooting yourself in the foot in shounen series.

Turns out people don't like having sonwthing shoved in their face.

>doesn't chomp cigar tree branches
>doesn't drink alcohol by slicing off the bottom and swallowing it all in a single gulp
>doesn't get his ripped apart, sliced up and shredded, or burned, or fucking gnawed and eaten off, only to continue to fight with his mutilated body part, like in the manga
>fights were gimped to shit, no gore, blood or any of the savagery
>anime stops at cooking fest, JUST when the story starts to get REALLY good, and fucks up the fight with Starjun, turning it from one of the most brutal, ultraviolent fights in the manga to the shittiest goddamn bullshit in the anime
>just a complete fucking trashfire of an anime adaption
>"Jeez, I guess people just don't like Toriko. Oh well, wrap it up Shimabukuro. Huh? Tons of loose ends and plotlines? Too fucking bad, our piece of shit adaption isn't making up Dragon Ball money."
>"lol Toriko sucks gaiz, it was never good"

I want to punch you all in the fucking face.

Attached: Toriko_ready_for_fight.jpg (1280x720, 161K)

They started pushing Toriko precisely BECAUSE the manga was very popular.

Stop liking the taste of shit.

Yeah it was popular but was it "crossover with One Piece and Dragon Ball" popular? Cover pages all the time popular? Even HxH would have more rights to that than Toriko

Oh man... so much this. Toei doing budget animation ruined a lot.

And it just feels worse since you started off with that Ufotable adaption of episode 1.
youtu.be/D-l-g5_AyIY

The chef arc killed the manga, komatsu was a mistake.
Sequel with kids when?

Basically this Japs numale got offended with manly MC. That's why manlet Asta and crybaby Deku are selling more instead.

>"crossover with One Piece and Dragon Ball" popular?

YES. IT WAS. And they could have had something great on their hands that could have lasted years, but instead they decided to half ass the anime. And don't get it twisted, that IS the reason Toriko failed. The anime was fucking trash. If it weren't for that ONE THING, Toriko would STILL be on TV right fucking now, and we'd be getting food adventures in space in the manga.

>YES. IT WAS.
Eh, I'd strongly disagree with that

>Japs numale got offended with manly MC
Japan children don't care about the MC, they just only care if it's interesting

>see Toriko plastered everywhere
>"Who the fuck is this Goku clone?"
>Watch the anime
>"this is some low quality shit, why is this so popular?"
>read the manga
>"....holy shit, this is the most fun I've had reading manga in years. Why is the anime so trash?"
>find out there's a fucking OVA
>"HOLY SHIT, THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME! WHY IS THE ANIME SO TRASH?!"

This
and to a degree this.
The anime was completely butchered, hell what Toei did to it was the most gruesome thing in the anime. It was censored to the point of 'why even bother'
And while no Lolis is a stretch, the lack of female characters didn't help. Them adding one that does nothing but exposit shit we can clearly see with our eyes wasn't going to fix it. She needed to be more of an actual character and now what we got.

I liked it.

I'll agree the anime did not help matters at all. If Toriko had a fantastic adaptation like Kimetsu no Yaiba has right now, or hell, if Toei treated Toriko like they are currently treating Wano arc of One Piece, things would be very different

Melk is my waifu.

>Eh, I'd strongly disagree with that

Yeah, well, sales figures would disagree with you right back. Toriko was in the top ten in Jump sales, nipping right at OP and DB's sales numbers, for fucking years.

Trust me, dude. There's a reason Shuisha spend millions of jap dollars trying to promote Toriko. They literally thought it was the next best thing and had a good reason to think so. Again, the ONLY reason Toriko is cancelled is because the anime was dogshit.

>or hell, if Toei treated Toriko like they are currently treating Wano arc of One Piece, things would be very different
Never would have happened. It took YEARS for OP to get the attention to animation it has now despite being THE number 1 manga in Japan

Rin's a cutie, tho. This butt wiggle was adorable.

Attached: tumblr_nzur91ToKn1u1ks9qo1_500.gif (500x281, 212K)

>Never would have happened
Which is why I said "if"

>Toriko was in the top ten in Jump sales, nipping right at OP and DB's sales numbers
I think you need to look at Toriko's sales numbers again because this isn't true at all. Like it did okay but not at the level of the highest titles Haikyuu was (and is) doing better than Toriko in comparison

Last arc was one hell of a fucking wild ride.

Attached: 1469117396891.jpg (1042x1563, 220K)

They need to turn the finale into a movie.

I never said it did as well as the highest series, I said it was nipping at OP and DB's heels, and it was. OP was leaving both of them in the dust as per usual, but wherever DB was Toriko was right behind.

>Dragon King Derious attacks
>With a laser so powerful it leaves the galaxy
Good shit. The entire last arc was amazing, down to Zonge saving the world. I'm glad I was there for those chapter threads, it was a blast with like zero shitposting.

>-No underdog protagonist;
Toriko is the underdog in most fights.
>-Not enough loli shit;
Komatsu is a shota.
>-Not enough shitty porn fanservice;
Man fanservice also counts.
>-No forced female protagonist;
Rin and Komatsu.

Maybe it just turned into shit by the end of the bambina arc so it was axed, manime retard.

I remember it being pretty close to Naruto at least? There are even some old images from sales threads, about how Toriko took Bleaches spot in the Big 3.

Attached: Toriko Big 3.jpg (792x440, 187K)

I will never forgive what Shimabukuro did to Jiro.

And last page of all that crazy "food" reimagining of the universe was utter kino.

>Komatsu is a shota

He's a manlet, the same age as Toriko.

>Man fanservice also counts

Not when the men are muscular and manly.

>Rin and Komatsu.

Neither of them are forced. Rin shows up like every 20 chapters to drool over Toriko's dick and that's about it.

Ugly art style, no likable characters, boring fights, that rushed last arc...

Rin is literally ChiChi

I thought it was a pretty creative and fun battle shounen when I was reading it (see the PAIR arc). It’s a shame they had to rush the ending out so a lot of the world building was never fully realized. The concept of gourmet eating bizarre monsters is a hell of a lot more original than superheroes or punching wizards, the new mainstays I’d Jump.

Fuck no. GOD no. Not even fucking close. Chi-Chi is an overbearing cunt wife tigermom with stupid priorities for her ultrapowerful martial arts genius son. Rin is an energetic genki girl who likes sweets and wants Toriko to mating press her into retardation.

Attached: Rin_GS2.jpg (496x888, 43K)

it was preaty great tho, food luck probably killed it tho

The entire concept of appetite demons being creatures from the past or even entirely different universes being reborn in the form of a person's appetite is extremely interesting to me.

All wrong, faggot, you should stick to capeshit and never show your ugly mug again.

But Rin doesn't piss me off whenever she's on screen like Chi-Chi does.

That was more due to Bleach's hard decline over time and part of the forcing other anons mentioned earlier

>but wherever DB was Toriko was right behind.
And I'm saying no it was not. It was not even as high as other shounen series at the same time

He's fine, he's drinking sake with Ichiryu in gourmet heaven.

Is sake the hardest drink japanese drink?

Also, he's a Food Spirit now. That doesn't mean he's gone for good, hell anyone who ate PAIR could probably find him at the Heavy Drinker Archipelago and say hello.

>Toriko is the underdog in most fights.
Have you even read Toriko? He was one of the four heavenly kings, and fought as peer with his opponents
>Komatsu is a shota.
Komatsu was 25 at the beginning of the manga
>Man fanservice also counts.
Kek now you have exposed yourself as an insecure heterosexual
>Rin
I repeat the question: have you even read Toriko? Rin was almost always barely present or significant for the plot.

Remember when Rin used a fragrance that made Toriko go insane with rage and fantasized about Toriko raping the shit out of her right then and there?

No one's ever really gone.

...like, seriously, the spirit world is an actual place that you can leave and enter freely if you've eaten the right ingredients. Don Slime tried to convince Ichiryu to come back to life but he refused.

Attached: 5113190-neo1.png (859x837, 345K)

Attached: Happy Melk.png (840x464, 583K)

Not really, it's like half as strong as vodka. Awamori is stronger, another rice drink that's distilled and not brewed.

>making up some newscaster bitch for fanservice
>not just featuring Rin more

She's a cutie, short haired tomboy, this shit writes itself.

Attached: images.jpg (300x168, 11K)

My like only gripe with the near-perfect penultimate chapter is that Don Slime never made an appearance at Toriko's wedding, even though Neo should've puked him up too. That's it.

I bet if Rin drank Toriko's semen it would awaken her appetite devil.

Best part about Toriko is that this is not even shitposting, in universe this could really happen.

you bet he needs ''special preparation'' for best sperm taste as well

Oh it absolutely would. Toriko's saliva alone was able to activate her gourmet cells and revive her.

Dr Stone is next.

I love u

Dr. Stone is more likely to become the grim reaper of the loser ranking like Samon was if anything.

I wish Samon was still here.

Asta is pretty manly
>worked out religiously to make up for his lack of magic
>loudly proclaims his intentions of marrying Sister Lily
>easily forges camaraderie with like-minded boneheads

>Why couldn't it take off with so much support?
Dunno, i liked it a lot.

Based taste. I can't believe Komatsu didn't get together with her.

the series was entertaining though

Never read or watch it but it looked neat from afar.

it doesnt have a good target audience, it doesnt look very cool compared to modern shounen shows, it doesnt attract alot of the teen audience, especially female audience that stuff like bnha and kimetsu does because of the art style, and a lot of the people that are into dragon ball, one piece, which is what the style is closer to, are more normie and might not find out about this show, and it still looks dumber than dragon ball/one piece pirates on the surface, and as for the kids, its probably pretty lame for them, seems really outdated on what kids these days would like. If it had a more modern/female appealing artstyle(make the characters cute/ikemen, it would have done alot better imo, especially since the setting kinda works for that with komatsu and toriko's relation ship, and with sunny/coco supposed to be pretty boys, zebra's wild character would also attract alot of women if he was a bit more pleasant looking

The fact that garbage like Souma survived that long says a lot about anime audience.

All that focus on Erina and drop in quality couldn't even kill it off as fast.

problem is komatsu isnt cute (artstyle wise anyway)
>Man fanservice
its terrible man fanservice, no female under the age of like 35 are gonna think these guys are hot, other than toriko they all look incredibly lame look at the shounen shows that are popular with girls

if it was drawn by like the artist of hitman reborn or kuroshitsuji or something then it would have almost definitely worked in that aspect

The Japs were triggered by Komatsu who actually looked like a Jap.

Look at the fucking protagonist. His face. His retarded clothes. Who the FUCK would ever be curious to read this repulsive looking shit? Why it got shilled SO hard is beyond me.

>komatsu isnt cute
that's why he got a nosejob but it was too late

>Most readers probably forgot toriko ever existed.
The series is still highly popular among the Japanese nationalist gay community.

Man, one thing I really liked about Toriko was how it did power scaling. Shit got crazy but it always felt like a justified progression in power. Further, I think the ways in which they displayed the power were really nice and properly conveyed the scope, rather than have the side characters lazily comment about how "epic" the fight was.

Shit taste. Toriko was pure manliness

he looks like a goofy retard and his repulsive blue-orange eye cancer contrast is goofy too

Because it wasn't that good and the shilling was painfully obvious.

I like how it ripped off most of its ideas from HxH and OP. Pretty based.

If you look at the numbers, Bleach was still selling higher than Toriko. This cover in particular is where people started catching on to shueisha's blatant shilling and how Shimabukuro was best friends with Oda and got Toriko pushed to hell and back despite his previous manga getting cancelled when he got arrested for paying an underaged prostitute for sex. People questioned why Toriko was put alongside One Piece, Naruto, and Dragon Ball despite the fact that Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, and GinTama were far more popular and successful, so they refused to support it due to shueisha's blatant shilling. In the end, Toriko was cancelled due to lack of interest, and we haven't even heard from Shima since.

which one came up witht the dark continent/secret world theme first? remember at the time i thought they were both pretty close

Toriko was shounen meaning only jap little boys read it and would think the characters are awesome.

Not even that. Toriko's training montages were like HxH's. I remember Togashi commenting about when he read most of the stuff at that time and it closely resembles his works, he just laughs it off.

You are full of shit, user. I just checked the sales numbers for Toriko in 2013 and 2014 (i.e. in the middle of its run). And it seems the sales cap at around 400k per volume, which, while not bad is very, VERY far from "nipping right at OP and DB's sales numbers", so don't give me that shit. If you have any numbers to offer to counter that, then go ahead. But if not then you are just full of shit.

Why do we always have toriko threads? The series ended years ago. It was dumb fun, but felt soulless.

Let it go.

>soulless

this is not a bnha thread

you dont actually think only little boys read shounen do you

That's like asking why landlines still exist. Because older people still exists and prop up tastes beyond current trends.

That's right. Today is all about isekai, baby!
BTW, Slime (monthly) has better manga sales than Toriko (weekly) had when its anime was still running. Toriko capped at less than 400k, while Slime already got 500k - as an ADAPTATION of a Light Novel.

Attached: Slime.png (423x328, 26K)

It lasted a long time it just didn't sell that great.

A good chunk of OP's audience is zoomers though

Actually Zebra x Komatsu was a pretty popular ship, and Coco and Sunny had doujins together too. Personally I liked the Toriko x Zebra x Komatsu ones because tiddy sandwich and competing. Coco got better solo art though.
