They were a warrior race whose culture was based in conquest and bloodshed, and Frieza used them as tools to conquer planets which most of them were happy to do. It seems in super that they were more civilized people with a militaristic culture with some saiyans that weren't warriors like the pilot saiyan that had never even become a great ape before
