We need to devise a brief phrase that, if uttered in Nihei's presence - during an autograph session, let's say - will direct his psyche upon itself and tear his desire for external validation to shreds. It's the only hope we have left for a return to form.

The final chapter or so was bizarre. I guess the author ended up really hating what he'd made so wrapped it up in the worst way possible.

Nihei is kind of a one-hit-wonder I have to say; despite later works copying the æsthetics of Blame! it misses that je-ne-says-quoi that Blame! had that is hard to describe. Biomega held me not captive in the same way that Blame! did and Knights of Sidonia was just hard to get into to begin with.

I think the issue is that in later works he tried to make a plot rather than a world and the appeal of Blame! is that there is no real plot; there's an amazing world but the plot is really just "Killy travels through it with his awesomesauce gun to try to find Net Terminal Interface Genes".

It didn't. The first girl stayed dead for good. Tsumugi somehow took over the clone's body, which is slowly morphing into something else, supposedly Tsumugi's "true" human form.

I don't remember the details now, but she's a completely new persona, she doesn't revert back to the dead girl at any point.

It was alright. It was a space battle mecha set in a Nihei designed world. I read Blame! after I had read Sidonia, and looking back through it alot of what made Sidonia cool was really heavily pioneered in Blame!, and I imagine a lot of his other manga as well.
The Blame! Academy chapters are pretty unintentionally funny in hindsight, considering what Sidonia was to become. I feel like the characters, for the most part, just weren't strong enough to make their choices and decision believable-- minimal dialogue worked well for blame, because it was part of the mystery, but things that totter around teenage relationships really live off of wordy dialogues and the tension it creates.
Like, how did Tanikaze's character really develop, aside from the various relationships that he cultivates with girls? Not much.
What he really should have done was to make it a full SOL set on Sidonia, with all of its hard-science space monster-fighting hijinks. He drew some pretty relaxing vistas, and it could have kinda been a sort of Anti-Blame instead, were decaying structures and huge towers are charming and comfy rather than foreboding and menacing.
Some interesting and some fun ideas, but kinda wasted potential

Liked the setting, all the desperate measures they had to take to survive that long in their space ship, the mysterious alien threat.
Design of the spaceship was cool, also really enjoyed the mech fights.

Tsumugi basically is the gauna daughter of Hoshijiro and Kunato. The MC was cucked but he didn't give a shit.

All Hoshijiro gauna clones have bits and pieces of the original but none of them truly is reincarnate Hoshijiro. And the best clone, the Benisuzume one, was merged with and took over by Tsumugi at the end anyway.
