So I finally decided to read Berserk. Honestly the first 2.5 volumes were almost kind of a chore, not bad but just mediocre. Guy with a paddle sword fights demons, okay(Is Berserk to blame for the trend in fantasy media of blades that are ridiculously and impracticaly fucking WIDE? Because that shit is everywhere now and I hate it)
But I have to say, I'm glad I have a few annoying friends that made me keep going. There is so much great stuff in the flashback arc. That scene where Guts looks shocked when Gambino gives him a healing salve for the cut he inflicted on him and how glad that makes him just about breaks your heart. The whole childhood era is masterfully done really, even the rape didn't feel unnecessary for once.
Really what I enjoyed the most was the stuff without the fucking demons/Apostles, I think this manga would have been so much better without supernatural elements. There's almost like this mandate the Japanese seem to have that you have to go full ridiculous and over-the-top, and I don't understand why. Sure, some demons look creepy, the art is good and I'm reminded of paintings of Hyeronimous Bosch and Lovecraftian shit, but...I dunno, I think the "realistic" flashback portion is the best part of the manga.
Miura could have easily had some other way for Griffith to betray the Band of the Hawk that didn't involve the acid trip of a schizophenic.
And Griffith's rape of Casca really bothers me. I can absolutely believe Griffith would sacrifice his friends to achieve his goal, but once he has already ascended to Godhood, why would he rape the one person in the world who worships the ground he walks on? Griffith is cruel in a utalitarian sense, there is a REASON why he sacrifices his friends. When his goal is already achieved, raping Casca seems like being evil for the sake of being evil.
It falls flat and makes me think Miura did this because he's Japanese, and all Japanese are perverts. It's genetics.
So when people want to discuss a manga here, do they usually just say nothing in the original post?

You seem to be very angry. I know Berserk is quite popular, are you angry that I'm not sucking its dick completely? Or that I'm invading the sacred space where you spend 16 hours every day isolated from humanity? Or are you just a dick for the sake of being a dick? Because if it's that last one I can respect that.
Noah Howard
You seem to think people care about your thoughts.

I offered some thoughts as a jumping off point for a discussion. I care about other people's thoughts on the manga, so I thought it would be fair to offer my own first.
Next time I'll just post a picture and say "discuss", that's so much better, apparently.

he raped casca to fuck guts up as much as inhumanly possible and it kinda worked
Daniel Lee
How so? What have I said that's been onions-filled? The idiosyncracies in my speech may be a bit formal-sounding, but that's because English isn't my first language so I try to steer clear from too much slang, nigga.

I really dug Berserk from the start. There was always implications that Guts wasn't just some tough guy and it kept me invested. Also I don't really see the inherent issue with supernatural elements. If anything it makes Guts' day to day life more easy to empathise with. With that being said Golden Age is the highlight of the manga, but not because it lacks the supernatural elements. Unfortunately Berserk goes downhill afterwards pretty quickly, with the tone gradually shifting until it feels like you're reading a different manga (and not in a good way).
you are a normalfag, you’ll never understand go back to r*ddit or facebook where you belong

I still liked the conviction Arc(and loved the Lost Children Arc), I think it goes downhill during the Hawk of the Millennium Empire Arc.
I guess, but...somehow it feels like it's reducing Griffith from a complex character into a moustache twirler. For me at least

Griffith raped Casca to demonstrate to Guts that he is helpless and weak, that the roles have been incontrovertibly reversed. Think about how Griffith felt as the mute and lame wretch his allies rescued. He loved Guts. and Guts betrayed him. Griffith became the pathetic scrap of a man he was in that dungeon, a parody of his former beauty and grace, and that was Guts' fault. "Winning" wasn't enough, he felt he needed to salt the wounds and grind Guts' pride down to nothing.
Kayden Collins
lmao you care about them too, if not why are you here to "discuss" your shitty anime

Conviction is where the tonal shift starts. Lost Children's good but not quite as good as Golden Age or Black Swordsman in my opinion.

Is there any berserk thread that doesn’t go to shit almost instantly? Seriously it’s either the same repeated memes of it not ending or people sharing their bad fanfiction ending predictions

don't you mean the black woman arc?
Chase Taylor
I don't think the Apostles are the core of any arc. The lLst Children arc is about the cruelty of adults to children and how hard it is to live in a harsh world, especially for someone as helpless as a child. And the conviction arc is about the malady of religion without restraint.
You can do this without demons. My problem isn't the violence of the demons, I guess is just don't like supernatural stuff. I recognize that's a subjective opinion.
David Evans
Not defending Griffith-demon raping a girl until she's retarded, I'm talking about what I infer HE felt and believed so OP can better understand why the mean bad rape happened. He blamed Guts for his fall from grace, and literally damned him to hell.
Josiah Wilson
Oh the irony.
Jack Walker
Look, can we just agree that the Griff man was gay, I'm not even trolling, there is subtext and then there is subtext that glows through the page.

>Berserk withouth supernatural elements
So no Behelit, Griffin betryaing Guts to get super powers, that dark rider that always saves Guts, and no Puck? If you guys hate fantasy so much why not read history books? Like Goddamn this manga wouldn't be what it is withouth supernatural elements.
Grayson Cooper
incredible you just described the behavior of a rich girl who fell in love with a poor guy but is too proud to admit it until she explodes

It's lazy and contrived. Chosen One narratives are so trashy.
Jason Brown
I've only read the manga. Heard the 2016 adaptation was bad and I've seen some of the CG so I have no interest in watching it.
Jacob Barnes
All of these complaints can be rebutted by saying "keep reading the manga". Honestly, changing this shit would mean that what's currently happening would also have to be drastically changed.
Hunter Gonzalez
pity that you live in a deterministic world, the whole concept of Berserk's fate is identical to ours, the same is true for free will, which exists but is only an illusion
Cameron Price
Posting on Yea Forums doesn't prequire contrarianism. Intentionally stifling conversation longer than two sentences is the mark of a teenager or underdeveloped adult. Take pride in being a loser if it actually adds any value to your life other than being edgy to someone you'll never meet nor speak to again.
Have sex, as you'd like me to say.
Eli King
Uh, I hate to break this to you, but the brand Guts carries makes him able to break determinism, because he's in-between reality.
So Berserk is ultimtely anti-deterministic. This is spelled out in the manga
>why would he rape the one person in the world who worships the ground he walks on? Because the person he really wanted to rape was Guts. But he was too embarrassed to reveal his faggotry to his new colleagues and thus tried to use Casca to indirectly rape Guts.
Hunter Allen
Griffith RATIONALIZES sacrificing the Band of the Hawk via utilitarianism. He actually did it because his other option was being paralyzed and impotent for the rest of his life, unable to pursue his dream. Prior scenes, where he REEs over Guts leaving the band, tries unsuccessfully to fuck Casca, tries unsuccessfully to throttle Guts etc. outta be all the explanation you need for why he raped Casca. It wasn’t evil for the sake of evil, it was evil for the sake of spite.
Of course, that’s just how I interpret his actions. He has sufficient psychological depth that other logically consistent rationales are also plausible. I believe that level of nuance is why we all suck Berserk’s cock more than anything else.
James Lopez
hahahaah, user you should know how to read and understand the manga better, not being part of the God Hands plans does not imply of being outside the flow of karma, the Idea of evil itself was born from only a fraction of all existence (human part) , a part can never control everything because it is already inside.
Jordan Perez
Some of those scenes really make Griffith seem lie a petulant child. He was always aware Casca was in love with him and never had any interest in her, which is natural as he's a flaming faggot. Then when he gets fucked up suddenly he wants that pussy because he's so vain he knows she's the only one that might fuck him now. Even though he really wants to fuck guts
Benjamin Wright
Stupid blogposter
Robert Allen
What is Casca's race? Because of the name I assumed she was supposed to be Mediterranean and her darker skin was a visual way to distinguish her from the pale Anglos and Frenchies.
But people keep calling her "Black"
Jose Evans
People are stupid. She's just darker skinned. Her race is never mentioned or brought up, and completely irrelevant to the plot. It's a stylistic choice to make her darker skinned.
If the Golden Age Arc Trilogy movies didn't cut out the childhood of Guts I think they would have been a great adaptation.
And no, I don't care they cut out the fucking Baki Raka or Wylde.
James Evans
>Is Berserk to blame for the trend in fantasy media of blades that are ridiculously and impracticaly fucking WIDE?
That thing was too big to be called a sword. Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron...
> And Griffith's rape of Casca really bothers me. I can absolutely believe Griffith would sacrifice his friends to achieve his goal, but once he has already ascended to Godhood, why would he rape the one person in the world who worships the ground he walks on?
He needed a vessel to be reborn during the second eclipse. He uses Casca as a portal to bridge the natural world and the supernatural world. Otherwise the members of godhand are unable to interact with natural reality.
Henry Thomas
The rape actually makes sense. The entire reason Griffith goes fully nuclear is Guts. He did it to spite him, and to lose any last trace of humanity he might have left.
Logan Cooper
That a pretty decent explanation actually. I just don't think Miura thought of it beforehand. As far as I know he makes shit up as he goes along, which is why old fans pull their hair out at how long he takes. The Japanese George R. R. Martin
Daily reminder Griffith is a fuckboi who sold his ass to an old man.
Luke Powell
The immature fucking faggots on this board. You can't even take another man's face in your hands and caress him while ferverntly telling him he's "yours" without children on the internet screeching about gayness.
He probably does have the key plot points written (or at leas thought) even if he makes up the rest along the way. He also does seems to have a method or general logic even if sometimes it seems inconsistent. I know people think going from a dark ages real like setting to a demons setting to a fantasy setting looks as if he can´t decide what Berserk is but i am pretty sure he changes these genre settings to better reflect Guts inner conflict and struggles.
OP dont listen to the senile pedos. They are quite literally brain damaged. All they do is watch SoL anime, self-inserting as school girls participating in their clubs, sports, and other group activities with other schools girls, then avatarfag as moeblobs parroting tired old phrases.
Easton Brooks
I'm sorry but guts' magical adventures with the LOTR fellowship just doesn't feel like Berserk. It feels like pointless filler from a man who should have ended the manga by now.
Not taking anything away from a lot of the work, it's great, but it's overstayed its welcome.

>Admitted new fag kek. Don't blog friend.
But to stay on topic, Golden Age arc is arguably the best arc in the history of the medium. >better without supernatural elements then it wouldnt be berserk. It would be generic middle aged manga #99. I think it's better with them because it's about a man facing extraordinary levels of suffering and chugging through obscene levels of persecution but going on without complaining, get the message friend. But I do agree golden age was the best part, but it served it's role and the story was best served continuing with its demons and the like. >rape of casca bothered me He was pissed at Guts so he raped casca as (more) revenge. I get you're new but don't be a speedreader as well
Andrew Carter
>But to stay on topic, Golden Age arc is arguably the best arc in the history of the medium.
How would you rank the Berserk arcs?
>Black Swordsman arc >Golden Age arc >Conviction arc >Falcon of the Millennium Empire arc >Fantasia arc
Anthony Lee
>then it wouldnt be berserk. It would be generic middle aged manga #99. I think it's better with them because it's about a man facing extraordinary levels of suffering and chugging through obscene levels of persecution but going on without complaining,
I agree. And none of what you said requires demons in any way. You only need to look at Guts' childhood years to see how good ordinary humans are at inflicting suffering and pain.
Parker Evans
Personally from best to worst >Golden age >black swoardsman >conviction >falcon >fantasia If it werent for the shitty fucking boat fight I might have considered putting falcon over Conviction. I like the worldbuilding and expansion of the world and its politics that falcon brings but the boat fight was shit and drags it down and the rebirth of Griffith in conviction was nice, and the torturer posse fight was good. The Pirates automatically make fantasia worse arc even though it had its amazing moments (pic related)
>You only need to look at Guts' childhood years to see how good ordinary humans are at inflicting suffering and pain true but that will bring only a human level of suffering and pain. While it still gives a great story and sensation the almost cliche badass level of guts as we know him cant be reached with that. No humans will chase him in hordes for every night, every day, for years for the sake of trying to consume him.
found it more entertaining at the time, maybe because it was when my initial excitement levels were sky high. Also the group of whores in conviction were lame. needed for the plot I get it but lame. I forgot that lost children is technically convitiction too, so 1. GA 2. Conviction 3. BS
Kayden Walker
I think the whores are very good. It shows how even when weak people(Nina with the retarded hair) cling to strong people(Luca? The brown haired whore) they still envy them their strength on a primal level which poisons the relationship.
It's very Nietzcheian in it's approach to Slave Morality and the exploration of it.
Levi White
That's the PS2 game
Nolan Richardson
Honestly the main reason I hate them is because I saw the anime before I read and the CG for nina was some of the most goddamn worst CG i've ever seen and I cant let that go. Nina and Luca are intersting characters and enrich the story and experience.
Jace Roberts
Hahahaha why would you ever watch that anime past episode 1?
Tyler Brown
I heard good things about berserk, loves the GA movies, and wanted to experience more of the story. At the time I hadn't started to read manga because I "wasnt that much of a weeb". When I did read the manga I realized that it wasnt just the shit animation but the writing and story was equally terrible in comparison to the source. It was as if they were rushing to catch up to current story even though there wont be new material for a few years
Parker King
see my apologies for being a retard
Luis Johnson
I'm just sorry to think of all the people whose first exposure to Berserk was the 2016 anime and now they'll never read the manga lol. What a trainwreck that was.
Bentley Sanchez
Berserk has always experimented with tone and genre within different arcs. Just as Black swordsmen is pure dark fantasy, and golden age low fantasy, this current fantasia arc is high fantasy
Samuel Ross
Donovan did nothing wrong, another innocent black man unjustly murdered.
It was terrible. Im just lucky my first exposure were the golden age movies. I mean sure the CG wasnt seamless but way better than 2016 and told a good story
I blame Gambino more than I blame donovan
Angel Brown
I was always under the assumption that lost children was part of the conviction arc, no?
Dylan Brown
I liked the GA movies, if only they hadn't cut out the early years with Gambino they would have been great. Proud black Kang just following his nature
Colton Robinson
"You're a normalfag" is not a fucking argument. Why do you even say he is a normal fag? He's not talking about his social life, he just made a fucking post about Manga and his opinion on it. That's what people here do, they come and post their shit opinions >inb4 hurr durr normalfag

What are the themes of each arc?
Isaiah Richardson
What's with asians and finding white hair so kawaii? Would they rape my grandma?
>And Griffith's rape of Casca really bothers me. Evil essentially fuses with your very being when becoming an Apostle or Godhand, Conrad states this during the Black Swordsman Arc
Isaac Carter
I don't know, the archer in griffith's new band of the hawk doesn't seem evil, nor does the moonlight knight really. or the flame dragon knight. Sure they're "bad guys", but they seem honorable and somewhat human, hardly PURE EVIL
Charles Parker
They're being kept in check by griffith. If you read the chapter where they take Rickert to the place in the back where apostles are killing and fighting the knight explained that this is their instinct but griffith keeps them under wraps and forces them to behave
Landon Adams
I remember in the manga the only commandment of an Apostle is "Do as thou wilt".
It's kind of a will to power type of thing, it's the opposite of Christianity religion-wise. I don't think becoming an Apostle makes you evil, it makes you more of what you are. They were all-evil in the beginning, but as the manga progressed Miura refined his idea for Apostles.
Dylan Anderson
>every manga under the sun has a highly faithful anime adaptation >One piece has 800+ episodes >Berserk gets fuck all
Luis Turner
OPs are mostly filler (not filler episodes but filler side convos to make it drag out, who wants 800 episodes anyways?) berserk cant be faithfully adapted in a profitable tv-14 rating (or the nip equivalent) so most self respecting, decent studios dont pick it up.
Kevin Smith
Even the land of 18th-century octopus porn is too chicken shit to adapt it.
Bentley Thomas
I'm with you OP, but I don't think the supernatural aspect fucked the manga. Golden age had a good rithm plus the supernatural and predestined hints added some flavor to the plot.
Apparently Miura really wanted that fucking eclipse but he had no idea what to do after that (and it shows). The manga became aimless, the supernatural overtones evolved into very generic fantasy, and separating the two most important characters destroyed the biggest tension.
The eclipse was great, specially in the anime. But it came at the cost of destroying what made Berserk good and different from your average manga for teens.
Okay, I really hate SJW terms like "queer-coding" and when the bitch about gay subtext, but...it's text here.
Has Miura ever talked about what his intentions were with the Griffith/Guts relationship? I need Word of God on this if any fan knows.
Chase Ramirez
the basic concept of following the dream or finding a dream is based on him and a friend from his high school, but the personalities are slightly inspired by Le rose di Versailles, so there is some hidden, unintended homosexuality.
>is based on him and a friend from his high school
Ah, okay. Japan is a very conservative country. I get it.
Camden Long
This just confirms my suspicions that I should tell everyone who is looking to get into Berserk to read from the Golden Age arc first and then go back to the Black swordsman arc if they like it enough, because man that Arc is not a good representative view of what's to follow
Nicholas Stewart
It's a mediocre arc and it has a lot of problems
>DON'T TOUCH ME!!! >LET ME FUCK A DEMON LADY ON THE FIRST PAGE
Jason Diaz
But it has the iconic Guts sad face which is the payoff for that beginning and the first indication of who Guts is.
Its a bit of a superficial take to narrow it down to sexual stuff only. Basically its a depiction of singular characters completing each others lifes in a way. Sexual attraction is sprinkled in here and there though.
Dominic Myers
>Is Berserk to blame for the trend in fantasy media of blades that are ridiculously and impracticaly fucking WIDE? Because that shit is everywhere now and I hate it
I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think that this was a real life thing in japan, during the downfall years of the samurai, when they were not really doing any combat and their whole life was just for show. And during this time they used to make abnormally large and impractical swords just to boast their egos.
Ryan Adams
It doubles as a cross for Guts to wear.
Adrian Parker
>what to do after that (and it shows)
How?
Noah Hughes
But the fact of the matter is, it was never a betrayal. Griffith never made any illusions about where he stood and how he would use his men. He acted in according with his own nature the entire time.
Wyatt Howard
It went from "let's see how Griffith becomes a King" to "how many wasps can Guts kill in 20 chapters" let alone bitches arc and jrpg arc.
There is also a part interview from 2015 in which he acknowledges that.
Gabriel Nelson
I'm convinced that she's half Kushan. Her village was situated near the border of Midland, and got raided a lot. I just assume her mama wasn't fast enough one night.
Jose Harris
You conflate the natural ebb and flow of stories with legimate critcism a bit. The Golden Age problmeatic can be compared to Empire strikes back vs Return of the jedi. Empire will always be superior story to jedi no matter what effort, because jedi is simple the resolution of a story. I agree on the frustration with the pirat arc, the frustrations with the story would be lessened with a tighter relase schedule though.
Liam Sanchez
