I find it funny that Slime is like the most popular isekai in Japan, but it was overshadowed by Goblin Slayer (not an isekai, but it aired in the same season) in the west.

Probably because Slime wasn't really all that "controversial". But once Rimuru starts doing "demonic" stuff in S2, things will quickly change. Afterwards Tempest becomes the isekai!USA, doing stuff like "regime change", "fake news" and other "corrupt politician"-like things. Depending on how much gets done in S2, we might even see Rimuru join isekai!Masons and fight off the isekai!Illuminati/isekai!Rothschilds. There is much room for "controversial" stuff depending on how it's portrayed.
And it all becomes VERY noticable due to how "comfy and wholesome" S1 was, so the returning viewers will be confused.
