I dunno dude. Yura was having pretty obvious mental problems and self esteem issues from the word go. She probably could have joined any club and would have gone all edgelord. Would have made an interesting handicraft club. When even the "no fun" serious girl was like "Chill out, bitch. It's just a game." You know there's something here that goes beyond the scope of what a high school senpai should be able to solve.
Well it's not like a whole lot of them got a bunch of development. Midget and glasses where really just there to round out the team while MC girl, senpai, teacakes and Rin did the heavy plot lifting. Blond was in there somewhere.

As far as sport shooting is concerned, everything you pointed out is correct, but it doesn't just apply to girls and children. It's extremely important for any athlete to be able to practice as much and as cheaply as possible. 22LR fits the bill, with the added bonus of being relatively easily available for sporting purposes in almost every country, with a few exceptions which are so strict you wonder why new shooters even bother. The benefits of this are obvious as the Olympics and ISSF championships are international events and as such the rules must be adapted as to not inconvenience either the travelling shooters in practice that's not always the case or whichever country is hosting a specific event.
As a bit of trivia, and I don't know if this is the case for summer shooting sports, but until the 70's biathlon did not have one standard caliber for international competitions, as such fullbore rifles were common back then, usually in some military caliber used by the athlete's nation. They only standardized in 1978.
