We saw Adam counter Zeus whose arm is far longer than Adam's arms during a move that is supposed to stop time itself. Poseidon isn't going to win that matchup since Adam is basically Humanities final boss much like Poseidon's more powerful older brother was the God's final boss.
Adam's eyes of the lord let him dodge every single attack Zeus threw at him until Adamas mode was activated and that was a scratch, and it still took until his eyes were completely dead before Zeus scored a clean hit. Adam is quite literally a counter-melee specialist even if he doesn't copy Poseidon's weapon form.

I get your point about using little known characters, but I can't agree wit hit for a few reasons. One I have mentioned, it's the trust in the author, if he chose the characters, there must a be a story he wants to tell about them. The other one, these character are little known outside of Japan, but at home they are big. Raiden is THE sumo fighter, a champion of champions. Okita and Shinsengumi had fanfiction about them written for more than hundred years already. Sakata Kintoki or Kintaro is a fairy tale everyone knows from childhood, like Red Riding Hood in the West. Just try looking at them from different angle.

Bishie design is usally boring because the artist doesn't make them expressive. Here it's not a problem because even the prettiest people make faces even a mother couldn't love, like Brynhild or Loki etc.
