You don't even now if his story is real. Even if it was it was his decision to commit a crime, from the point he decided to break the law on purpose he's accountable for any consequences. The KyoAni brand may recover financially (and it's still on the air) but the lives lost by the fire are irreplaceable and while some employees share responsability due to negligence it's still the act of that man what sparked the tragedy.
