It's not that they did bad things, it's that they died before it was their time. They died before they were able to live a fulfilling life. God doesn't want them to come into Heaven with regrets, so he puts them in Glie where they can find some meaning for their life, and accomplish something, before they move on to Heaven. Once their fulfilled, they have their Day of Flight where they go to Heaven.

They didn't necessarily have to do evil to end up in Glie, if the Young Feathers are anything to go by. I don't know what brought them there, though.

Not horrific but mostly they died with a lot of guilt with them, so they can’t let go of those feelings or conflicts. They don’t necessarily died by their own hands but they had a certain mental state when it happened and need to learn to accept what happened to give the next step.
