OP's image is among the worst panels but also closer to the norm than the detailed one.

The real issue here is the lack of consistency.

I don't like using the term "soulless" but it fits these images perfectly. Another one is the one where the flute playing goblin makes people see a flower garden with her playing. Just seems completely sterile.

That's because it was drawn by assistants. Chimera Ant arc was the peak of Togashi's abilities.

the first image is full of soul, especially in context where it's the first image of what the dark continent actually looks like, a place where creatures straight out of human imagination are the norm and beyond

I really fucking hate the way the textures are drawn in. Berserk does that shit a lot too and I just dislike how it looks. Part of it is that it's too busy visually. Maybe that's the point but it does nothing for me and probably accomplishes the opposite of what Togashi intended.

even then, CA arc was only impressive for its narrative. none of the art was particularly notable. I would like to say Togashi would have thrived far more as a novelist but the proliferation of manga makes the assumption sketchy.

It doesn't even really work for the sake of contrast because the the minimalistic shading of the the characters make them blend into the white background.

With Togashi you get the impression of someone who could draw well, but simply does not care enough at this point to do so.

This is not Togashi's doing kek, he just picked some photos and stick them together, added some filters and what not. The only parts drawn by him are the king and Halkenburg, which is why they are in such a contrast with everything else in the panel
