Shipping aside, it was unironically the most interesting relationship. Despite (or because of?) the head-butting, it often felt like the two had some sort of unspoken thing and “got” each other on a rather fundamental level.

Personally I was always a big fan of the idea of a Taichi-Yamato-Koushiro Freudian trio dynamic, and think it was something of a missed opportunity for the series.

Heck, I once sketched out a fanfic concept of an alt-02 story that culminated in a new vs old gen conflict arc, where it was Taichi-Yamato-Koushiro(+Takeru) vs Daisuke-Miyako-Iori(+Ken+Hikari) battling over two competing visions on how to save the Digital World.

Well that's not that far from how the team would operate in Adventure. Taichi would ask Koushiro for advise, with Kosuhiro's input Taichi would make a decision which Yamato would then criticize or point out the flaws and when things got too heated Sora would try to mediate, usually without much sucess.

The rest of the kids were almost "the crew" and followed them bar their focus episodes.

I want to say that Joe played an important role, but I can't quite describe it.
Mimi, bless her heart, was hardly ever any use outside of the ShougunGeckomon incident that she caused, and bringing the Cavalry against Piedmon which was fucking awesome.

Jou was some sort of force that tried to maintain things as normal as possible even if that was dumb and the Digital World proved him wrong over and over.
