That's not true. Devils can take whatever they want for their contract. It doesn't have to be lifespan.
For example future devil took half the lifespan of someone (presumably Makima), but for Aki, the details of the contract state that the devil gets to live inside Aki's eye. No lifespan needed at all.

Aside from acting wild the devils in this series are not too alien from the human personality. So I don’t think it’s too far fetched to think that the more intelligent ones may start operating on a human intelligence level. Magical contracts for a piece of skin or life is nice but in bigger scope of things that will get you jack when you are trying to expand your powers.

That being said, a demon needing that much money and acting like a war merchant is kinda weird. That was something the Yakuza boss pointed out. Most organized crime does start out as a means for ethnic groups to protect themselves and their communities (the Irish and Italian mafias were started expressly because both groups suffered tremendous discrimination and lack of opportunity- so they made their own), and a much of the growth of the modern Yakuza stems from post-black ship era Japan as a result of westerners basically forcing their borders open.

Now? Nah. They run a lot of the Japanese entertainment industry, but particularly sex work of all kinds. Soaplands and hostess clubs are pretty much entirely mobbed up along with the porn industry. There's non-affiliated male porn stars (including the guy whose name I forget is insanely prolific because the JAV industry only uses non-Japanese actors for white/black guy fetish stuff- there's actually a shortage of male porn actors) but most of the stuntcocks you see in JAV are Yakuza connected- especially anyone fucking the more famous girls (who are basically passed around by Yakuza along with many idols; Julia, Hitomi, Aika, etc have taken miles of Yak dick which says a lot if you've seen a Japanese dick uncensored). Most of the soaplands when I was there flat out refuse to take any foreign customers. There's a slowly building push to make refusal of service to foreigners/minorities/etc for anything illegal but I doubt anything will come of it.

The Yakuza can't even really claim to be all about protecting Japan/Japanese Culture/Purity or whatever- there have been more than a few non-Japanese Yakuza bosses. IIRC a fairly large group is ran by a Korean guy now. Also they're total pussies when confronted with anything resembling power- they play nicey nice with the dumb Jarheads in Okinawa and flat out don't do shit to stop any of the hundreds of crimes they commit there every year. The Jarheads and other US military in Okinawa commit a shitload of crimes compared to the natives and basically hardly ever get busted for it and when busted, rarely ever get in real trouble outside of probably getting punted back to another base. It's rarely organized or anything super fucked up- mostly just fucking idiot Jarheads, seafaring bellhops, and chairforce faggots getting drunk and getting into fights/breaking shit/stealing shit for no reason/etc. There's been a fair number of reported rapes over the years and some murders (I wanna say like 30 or so maybe in the last couple of decades? that's insane for Japan really).

Most of it doesn't get reported and the Nip police basically get told to fuck right off if the perps basically make it back onto base before they catch them. Command has cracked down in the last several years and pretty much instantly punts anyone who gets busted out of Japan to another base or busts them down but it hasn't done much to help. The locals by and large actually don't mind the base and don't have bad experiences with the soldiers but the ones that hate them are way the fuck more hardcore about making it known than the Yakuza.
