Haven't read the novels, but going by the dramatic beats of the episode, the pacing and delivery felt out of whack. With the castle assault itself, I never felt tension. Everyone from Team Hestia pretty much teabagged all the mooks and tied everyone down nicely. The elf talk felt misplaced in a "where the hell did that come from?" kind of way. I guess it's to establish how much of a favor she does for Bell, but I think this would have been better established beforehand when she received the swords from Blacksmith-kun with some solemn talk, than in the middle of the siege by exposition elf. And holy fuck, Bell. After an escorted walk in the park he stands there and charges up his argonaut fist, while the heroic bgm track tries desperately to add gravitas to a one-sided steamroll. After he effortlessly breaks the magic sword of the Appollo fanboy, he gets tied down out of nowhere by Cassandra of all participants. Oh yeah, her, who droned on with nebulous fortunetellings, which must have sucked up till now, or I couldn't fathom why they'd ignore her so vehemently throughout. And the one time he has concrete info about an infiltrator she decides to shut up. Anyway, now she holds Bell in a bear hug of titanic strength that could only be countered by, of fucking course, Lily, who is known muscles of steel. The drama with the blow up spell was kinda ok, if it weren't undermined by the hilarity of everyone being oh so shocked while we hold our breaths to see whether Bell will stand back up. And then everything finished off by that awkward suicide stab attack where I was taken out by the sudden change to the awkward looking character art and animation, as if they ran out of budget for the climax an unsatisfying punch. I'd expect the guy who animated Touma punching girls over and over to know how to deliver at least on that.
tl;dr For all the dramatic buildup beforehand, this sure was an awkward payoff. The minotaur episode this ain't.

Well, this was just bad. JC Staff has been known for skip and rush things, which they did here, of course.
-Bell was not supposed to have the Hestia Knife here, as it was used to pay Lily's debt (they got it back with Apollo's money later)
-Welf forged a new knife (Ushiwakamarunishiki) with the remains of the minotaur's horn. As it was forged by a blacksmith with the forging skill it was actually quite strong. Bell used both minotaur's knife for the War Game.
-Mikoto didnt blocked or dodged all the attacks, she was actually injured and almost got taken down several times
-They skipped the fight between Bell and some low levels from Apollo, and his conversation with Ryuu when she told him that he was the one that had to defeat Hyakhintus.
-Argonaut here was a chime, not a bell.
-Cassandra actually begged Hyakhintus way more hardly and she pushed him out of the window, otherwise he wouldnt have resisted that 1 minute charged Firebolt...
-This was the worst mistake. The fight between Bell and Hyakhintus was longer, Bell used hit and run tactics while the pervert barely managed to block his attacks because of the speed difference, but he did blocked them. They skipped all this in the anime.
-They skipped the conversation between Hestia and Hermes where Hestia explained that Bell stats after beating the minotaur were all SS and SSS.
-The new minotaur knife was the one capable of breaking Hyakhintus's sword, but this one doesnt exist on the anime...
-The battle kept going, where Bell was starting to get exhausted, also skipped.
-Bell actually fired a Firebolt directly to Hyakhintus when he started casting his magic, injuring him greatly. Cassandra stops Bell after this.
Anyway, this was just bad. They actually skipped 2/3 of the Bell vs Hyakhintus plus the other mistakes or things skipped. Thanks again JC Staff, i really hope they dont plan to adapt V8, because if they do Ishtar's arc will be a disaster considering how long it is.

Three episodes of build-up lead to one episode of fighting just so that the guy who nearly beat Bell to death before can run at him with a knife and lose to a kick/punch combo. The animation in the fight scenes is average at best to top all of this off. How did this get season 2?!

The battle was short, but it wasn't rushed. They spent adequate time on each person's role and Bell's final battle was a much lengthier back-and-forth that actually showed off how he was using psychological tactics to close the ability gap. The anime version went full Sparknotes and didn't have a single cut of decent animation to make up for it. I can only imagine they're trying to squeeze the mini-story compilation novel in, otherwise they could easily have used another two or three episodes on this arc and actually made it good.

The LN places a much bigger focus on how they use strategy to wear down Apollo's numbers. Ryu destroys an entire wall just antagonizing them enough to send half their guys to suicide against her level four status. Mikoto isn't supposed to be able to attack or defend when she concurrent casts at this point, so she pretty much runs around drawing aggro and taking significant damage before she can trap enough to finish off their wall defense force. iirc Bell had already charged Argonaut when he got there, which was why they needed a clear path for him, and spent the whole fight keeping Hyacanthis in a state of panic to make up for the level difference and his own exhaustion after using Argonaut. There's a lot more tension in stuff like him trying to stop his opponent from finishing his chant and the time limit before reinforcements arrive. It's admittedly one of the weaker arcs, but this fight itself was nowhere near as awful as the adaptation made it seem.

it's easily the least entertaining native isekai currently running. which says a lot, considering danmachi's name/popularity and what shows it competes with. disappointment? that's the understatement of the season. That sounds wrong, but apparently you do speak for the masses. I mostly just don't really associate "ultimate technique" sorts of themes with 80's action movies because they really aren't. Like the first things to come to mind under that category are things like Predator and Commando and that stuff has no role in those movies whatsoever. What you're bitching about is the entire concept of a set up and payoff which is like fundamental storytelling stuff no matter what decade or century you're drawing from, but honestly a lesson as basic as "people lower their guard when they think they won" barely qualifies as a technique for me.
The thing that they left out from the LN was really just that there was a lot of endurance training going on for Bell to get him used to fighting while beat up, but that doesn't really have as obvious of a payoff. I do think too much around the wargame was rushed, but that's such a bizarre thing to take issue with to me

It's not so much about the ultimate technique, although that's common, it's about the lame-ass storytelling setup:
