I've been watching a lot of anime lately where I can distinctly hear a few japanese words that I do know, but don't see the word in the subtitle. It feels like a fear that westerners might think a lot of anime is childishly retarded if the translations were literal, because of the way japanese is spoken -- or maybe many subs are just fuckin' bullshitting it completely and just making up "translations" based on a visual cues in a scene.

the translations change, the voice actors either have low emotions or ham it up WAYYYY too much, sometimes the reactions and script dont match the scene, or worst case, the dub over replaces the original sound effects and the overall quality suffers greatly. worst case, and most cases everything is combined into one rolling shit show, see gundam wing for a prime example.

If you watch just about any dub you'll notice a vast majority of them suffer from having the same few voice actors who can't even change their voice to sound like a different characters, and in some cases, can't even sound different from other voice actors. I never had this problem watching any western animation as a kid, so either the industry has really gone down hill or anime is the reject corner for aspiring voice actors for most new shows. And those are for the relatively well-funded dubs.

Because once you're used to watching anime, there's usually very little reason to bother with dubs; you're watching a Japanese product and are presumably familiar enough with Japanese culture that watching it in its original language shouldn't be jarring. Dubs aren't necessarily bad, but unless they're absolutely stellar like the Cowboy Bebop or Baccano dubs or offer a substantially different interpretation/experience of the original work like the original Evangelion dub or Ghost Stories, they're not really worth checking out unless you're a fan of the show or you're interested in Western voice actors.

The average quality of dubs has definitely improved in recent years and they're still a good way to get people into anime. But people who continue to exclusively watch dubs past that tend to be weirdly aggressive and obnoxious about it, so that doesn't help either.

i can't attest to the accuracy of the dub, could be ghost stories-tier rewriting for all my knowledge of russian goes. but i feel as though the european language fits the setting better. i never really liked japanese lawrence, unsure why, like his voice didn't match his face. japanese holo is great, but i just like the russian dub more. the dub of op is redone into russian and sounds decent and offers a more consistent product than you get if watching the english dub (japanese song, english VA's). not the biggest fan of the russian dubbed ED, but that's mostly because i feel as though the song is built on its engrish. it's a decent sounding dub of the song nonetheless

because is mostly shit, the dub guys this days make like a localization shit in the interpretation, or make a generic speak of their language, that's what happens with the spanish and the english language for example (happens a lot with the spanish, with the mexican, the spain, and latino)
In the gold days of dubs in spanish for example, the voice actor don't care about those shitty problems, the importan thing was only the best interpretation, and the recording studios were looking for the best performers in the market, that is how Homero Simpson's first voice in Latin existed, of which Hispanic and even English articles and opinions have been written about the Latin Spanish voice being the best of all. And also voices like that of Goku in Latin that marked entire generations with a much more powerful interpretation than the voice of the grandmother that you have in the original, or the voice of Vegeta.
Now that those days died, only remains the voice actor that are still alive, because for obvious reasons they are still working even in the same shows, but has the quality of the dubs downs to hell, people just move on and prefer the original voice, since they hire a voice actor for a reason, and the original language has a long working history superior to the existing dubbing today.
The only ones who prefer dubbing are basically the normies.
I am speaking for my continent more than anything, I don't know how good the thing is in European countries for examples.

I hate dubs because anime doesn't feel like anime if it isn't in Japanese. Any media is best when it is in the native language and the least altered form. Dubs also translate less well and are prone to localization. Voice acting as a profession is taken more seriously in Japan so the quality of the acting is more consistent. On a side note, dubfags are usually the type of people who say "animes," and only watch big 3 shounen or DBZ.
