I think the most common interpretation of the crow is that it somehow represents a person from Rakka's life who cared for her and perhaps tried to save her. It's implied that Rakka committed suicide, and accepting the love and grief that the crow represents is part of how she atones for the way she, by her lack of love and care for herself, harmed those who loved her.

Alright, I just finished episode 3 and I'm too distracted by how fucking huge this guy and the dude in the front of the church was.
Either Hikari and Rakka are average girl height (5'1"~) and he's like 6'8", or he's average male height (5'10"-ish) and they're under 4'9".

I don't know what it is, but this show has a really hypnotic tone to it. Basically nothing is happening but it's still paced really well and looks really nice and the voice acting is less cartoonish than most anime.
I don't remember the last time I marathon'd a show at 4AM but I'm glad I gave this show a shot.

I'm glad to hear that, this is definitely one of my single favorite series of all time. I get what you're saying too, it's a little hard to describe this show. It's not exactly slice-of-life or iyashikei, there's too much darkness and conflict (internal conflict, at least). I guess you could just call it a "drama" in the broadest sense, but I dunno. It's like a story built entirely upon themes and introspection rather than an active, A-to-B plot.
I first discovered it in the middle of a pretty terrible depression and it wrung me out like a fucking towel.

It's up to your own interpretation, I don't think they are but I can understand why you would think so. I believe being sin-bound is more a sign of some sort of mental imbalance that the current Haibane needs to overcome than a punishment for killing yourself as a human.

Yeah, I don't think they're necessarily specifically suicides, but are representative of Haibane who are carrying with them something that is incompatible with finding peace.
I posted that but honestly I agree. You described it very well. I think it's interesting though that the darkness and unease of Glie seems to all come from the suffering that Haibane bring with them from life. It feels like the idyllic, unchanging world is meant to be a place to rest and experience peace, in order to face the inevitable pain of moving on.

Reki probably was, and Rakka might have been. But they weren't sinbound because of it. That wouldn't be consistent with Rakka developing it late and being cured.
"Sinbound" is self-loathing. That's why the Renmei guy tells Rakka it's something no one else can really help her with, but she can't do it alone. It's natural that any haibane that committed suicide would be disposed to self-loathing
