The current population figures are inflated due to way more old people being alive compared to before. The higher the population becomes, the more the birthrate will lower. We haven't fully understood why, but it seems to be self-correcting. I suspect it's something to do with stress. The developing nations are always optimistic and filled with energy, they reproduce quickly and grow rapidly. The established nations are jaded and the citizens are always stressed out over something. Sperm count in men has been dropping in the first world, this has been measured and confirmed. The world eventually reaches a peak population density unless we directly intervene by forcing reproduction. This is actually good, since we'll eventually increase lifespans to hundreds of years, assuming we survive the chaos at the end of the fossil fuel era.
