He was a one note character. The perverted monk whose overpowered ability was rarely useful. His fillers were the same shit over an over again. Take Inuyasha as an example of a decent character. He carried nearly every fight until the end of the series where he became kinda useless and was actually the most reasonable among the group and also was treated like shit by Rumiko's self insert and the rest of the cast so you couldn't help yourself from feeling bad for him

Sanosuke, Renji and Kuwabara and pretty likable jobbers.
Also if I remember correctly Sanosuke only lost to Kenshin and Saitou (for obvious plot reasons), he did not lose any other fights I believe (I only read the manga so not sure how it turns out in the anime)
He's one of the few protagonists who jobs but also wins a fair share of fights. Maybe that's why he's so likable? He even did the classic wrestling job when he fought Cell
