I bought akari's fig back in 2014 for about 5,500JPY alter-web.jp/products/139/ (site price 6800 for some reason though), and it's a very well done figure, but simple, 1/8.

Yet, a quite similar fig in 1/7 alter-web.jp/products/2/ which is simple with nothing too special about it costs 12k. Which is about twice the price.
Inflation since then was maybe 10% at worst. Why are figures getting so much more expensive? Especially the quality stuff, that shit costs around 20k despite being small figures around 1/8. If you go through alter's site and look at prices in 2020 vs 2013 it's a difference of anywhere between 2-3x despite around the same amount of complexity involved.

I understand figures are a form of art and art can be beautiful, but literally unless you are living in really good conditions that are suitable for display it's pointless. For example pic related, in my humble opinion, defeats the purpose.
Actual art is much cheaper, much more displayable and most likely more pretty. A painted canvas giving off a story is much more interesting than some plastic shell. Figure cannot possibly give off as much detail or techniques.

I mean if you got the cash do what the fuck you want, but I am not a millionaire, and there's much better things to spend money on. At the beginning buying figures kind of made me happy but then I realized I don't even use them much if at all for any purpose and my art on walls is infinitely better for any purpose a figure might be used.

More people are getting into buying figures and companies will continue to raise their prices as long as people keep buying them.

I've always succeeded in cancellations because
1. Your buy ratio needs to offset a cancellation
2. Have a legitamate as fuck excuse
3. Make good on the next consecutive buyorders
In other words, they are cool if you miss payment dates on especially popular products, and you better have bought at least 5-7 figures to one cancellation, and even then not cancel every other fucking week. They are pretty reasonable just don't fuck around with em, if you can't pay that month explain, and well in advance of the date too so they can readjust their monthly stock and listing for availability, it's a fucking business.

Hobby and luxury printing will always be behind and likely require post printing finishing that currently makes it vastly more expensive and time consuming when compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

Resin printers can be used for under $1000 and return good results. The form printers are more expensive but print consistently well with little maintenance, for a printer anyway. 3d printing is decades old and always belonged to the industry, and continues to improve, mostly in the way of speed and range of materials, but it's certainly come down to the realm of prosumers

Nothing is... even injection molded parts have to be cleaned(to remove industrial mold release agent and/or grease), removed from their trees (like a model kit), assembled, sanded and finished (paint, decals, etc). Resin printers produce similar parts but the trees are 3d.

A lot of the trinkets like keychains and shikishi were marked up but I have a feeling they didn't know the value of their stuff hanging in the back because that Maitetsu scroll is going for 18,000yen on mandarake but they were selling it for $40. Those Illya pillow cases and blanket were limited to C93. I bought a bunch of stuff from them so they threw in the grab bag and Illya shikishi for free. The animate booth also had the Illya deskmat(same art as the pillow case) but that was sold out on the first day.
