Goku needs to be kept away from battling the villains of an arc until way later in it but how? The training dimension from RoF things just isn't tension inducing .

i mean, he's either training injured or dead, or both so... either make him the villian... or put him in some sort of a 'lost' state like cloud in the lifestream, but goku's not complex enough to be affected, or give him something he cannot defeat with fists. though that would defeat the genre

To be honest, one of the worst things of dbz is how goku isn't part of the arcs. Goku just feels like a plot device because of it. Of course, i don't think that dbs does this any better. Goku (and vegeta) being the only characters with protagonism in dbs is one of the worse things that happened to the franchise. At least in z the saiyans in general had great protagonism and it wasn't only goku and vegeta. Honestly, goku staying away from the plot isn't the solution. Akira should give protagonism to the other characters if he wants dragon ball to not become repetitive. Of course, akira only cares anout money so he will not do it
