When you are adapting a manga into an anime, especially in Nip-land, you assume that most know about the manga, or will get filled in by people that do. You can start slow because with the anime, you already have a viewerbase, the fans of the manga.

The way the anime handles things can completely change the viewer's perspective on a character, Askeladd being a prime example. Plus there are tons of anime adaptations that start in media res. I really have no idea why they chose not to here. Probably just because of time constraints and they'll just cut out the first two chapters entirely.

Based on that shit translation I'd say I was correct on my assumption of time constraints since it seems he's talking about where the anime adaptation will end. If the scenes are in the trailers as you say that's cool but it's still a shit move in my opinion. I'm not one to want a 1-to-1 adaptation of every manga to anime but in this case the first two chapters are fantastic at introducing us to the characters, making the characters intriguing, giving us a feel for their relationship, and just being a really fucking cool way to open the story.

The first half of farmland is fine. It serves as breathing room between two relatively fast-paced arcs, re-introduces us to the new Thorfinn and the internal conflict he's going through, and sets up Snake, Arnheid, and Olmar to name a few. It's even split between learning what's been going on with Canute. It's slower than before, yeah, but not detrimentally-so

I suppose we're getting Ylva's bonus chapter this episode too since they want to do things in a chronological order

If you thought the point was to see them harvest wheat and sell it for money you missed the point. The farming served as a way for Thorfinn to finally realize he's able to produce life with his hands instead of just death and suffering, the farming was just the way he realized that. Having a kid like Thors would've been another way to have that realization.

That being said, it is the most important arc of the entire story for how it affects both Thorfinn and Canute and the payoff at the end makes the entire thing worth it. It is unironically the most kino arc in any manga, not even Golden Age in Berserk comes close.

Third is BD sales, although everyone including the production committee knows that nobody really buys BDs for anime adaptations anymore, so it should be taken with a grain of salt as long as it sells horribly (like under 2,000 units).
AFAIK there isn't any anime-related merchandise so far, but Thorfinn is getting a figure already so it's good news.

Most shows are made via committee so the studio is making money from advertising, from the studio that represents the band that sings the opening and ending, and yes, the publisher of the manga. BD sales and specials are generally the icing on top, and though it is possible for them to make or break a second season, generally that doesn't happen to works like Vinland, just look how Golden Kamuy was handled.

The idea behind it is good, but it has so much boring filler, the plot isn't steadily progressing to the climax, it's just a slow crawl, then sudden BOMB* forced ass character development.

That's a lot of this show, characters don't really naturally progress, just something dramatic happens and they flip their whole world view.

according to the sagas, Leif's expedition (which is the only one that happened by the time of the Iceland flashback) never encountered the natives, only the later two did, and the second one attacked them on sight and never traded with them at all. The only expedition that had peaceful contact with the natives is the one that Thorfinn himself is supposed to be leading by the end of the manga

Does the manga return to form at some point? The quality of the writing is deep in the abyss once Hild appears, and I'm profoundly disappointed by it.
