It's less about Fate or the nasuverse in general and more like some quirky offbeat homage to mid-late-90s scifi VNs. The whole servants/masters and grail war aspect is downplayed a lot and the 'action', what little there is, is basically just window dressing, like a background running somewhat parallel to the narrative conflict it's portraying. So if you liked FSN, Extra or any of its various adaptations, you aren't necessarily going to find the same things to like here.

His training and methods were all completely wrong, but Shirou worked his ass off every night.

Shirou works hard to be a "hero of justice," which is horribly vague, but I assume he probably achieves that in some capacity in Fate and Unlimited Blade Works.

Rin works hard to win the Grail. Admittedly, by the end of it, she's more interested in destroying it than using it, regardless of the route. But she works the hardest for the longest, as far as any master whose only goal is the Grail goes (except Zouken in Heaven's Feel).

It's not necessarily about the Grail specifically. I guess it's more about the fact that she achieves the goal that she's been working so hard for. The same can't really be said for Shirou and Sakura, with regards to the Grail.

Shirou's Gradation Air isn't actually Gradation Air at all, it just mimics it. What really does is take an image stored inside his inner world, overlay it onto reality and use himself as the base material to make it into reality. No one else can do what he does, so no one can teach him anything. At best, his circuits would be in better shape and he'd have a better grasp on structural reinforcement.

Again, it's not about pain, it's about effort. Shirou got the shit kicked out of himself, but that doesn't make him a hard worker.

She's beautiful, cool, the Elder God-tier character archetype (kuudere), she's cute, innocent, fun to pick on, loyal, independent, smart/calm, respectable, tragic, kind, dorky, modest, the artist behind her is crazy about her, she's mother fucking King Arthur, she's badass, an empowering female character, charming, charismatic, confident, I could go on if I had all day. Takeuchi was a genius with her design. It should be no wonder why she's so popular. The only people who wouldn't understand why she is as popular as she is haven't read or even seen the Fate route, which has problems, but excels on fleshing out her tragic story and resolving her struggle.

Saber is only "dependent" on Shirou in title. Physically Shirou is the one dependent on Saber, while Saber is sort of dependent on his idealistic views which convince her to except her life and all its unique tragedies, much like he struggles to do. Without each other they wouldn't have been able to conquer the HGW and themselves.
They are my favorite couple because of this.

I think most people also recognize her as "the face of Fate" before they are introduced to her character and so some are hyped up by this, expecting her to be somehow perfect. Saber is only as good as her role in the VN, which is wonderful and endearing. She's just a nice design in all tertiary series, but only truly shines in the VN and specifically in the Fate route, though she's really charming and endearing in HF as well. Being exposed to her in any other route/story first (Zero, FGO, F/A) would leave a bad impression of her because her original character arc was written BEFORE she was as popular as she is now or when those stories were written.

It was in the OG VN that her character and personality was the most pure form of Saber that has ever existed. She wasn't shown to be very cute and Nasu himself said that he was worried about people not thinking she was a girl due to how he wrote her character. Realta Nua changed some things but she's essentially the same as the original 2004 VN and F/HA.

Lastly, I feel a lot of people are exposed to her fanart and promotional material which shows her to be a plucky, spunky, and cute blonde girl. However, most hardcore saberfags' main impression of her was and always has been something more along the lines of this (pic related) sprite from the VN. A calm, calculating, stoic, but still cute and charming girl. I'm pretty sure that a good 30% of her character sprites in the VN are something similar to this.

Arturia is My King and I fucking love her, lads. She's been in my life for 10 god damn years now and I don't feel I'm ever gonna be able to forget about her. Never has a character, from anything or anywhere, touched me so deeply. The relationship that Saber has with Shirou, of mutual trust and companionship even through disagreements and hardships, has become the ground work for my relationship with all women now.

Hm. I definitely see a lot of what you're saying, but I saw a lot more of it in Zero than in DEEN Fate. And she was a lot of fun to watch in the background of Unlimited Blade Works.

But I can't help but feel like most of the things you've said about her, are at least as true for one of the three girls I mentioned before.

The VN Fate does a decent job of her story with Shirou but isn't very good if you are already familiar with the world mechanics. It's HEAVY on exposition which you seem to already have had plenty of having seen Zero already. Which to be frank was an awful idea and I would have no idea why you did this.

I've watched all the main-series anime except the UBW movie. Plus the cooking spinoff, and bits of Carnival Phantasm.

Recently skimmed through UBW Season 1 looking for it, then the first couple episodes of Fate. But I think I might just be losing my goddamn mind.

I originally had no intention of reading the VN, but was told Fate needs to be experienced before Unlimited Blade Works, and both of those before Heaven's Feel. But DEEN Fate should, under no circumstances, be the first thing you experience in the series. Which I agree with, since I probably wouldn't have even finished it if I hadn't already enjoyed Zero so much.

I can confirm as a former secondary that that user is correct in saying that VN Saber is her most fleshed-out personality; I think I'm in the minority opinion but I believe the Fate route has a lot going for it if you can tune-out the exposition, especially towards the latter half where Saber's emotional conflict becomes the center of the story. In particular it's interesting to see how Saber's story is both an interpretation and foreshadowing of the ideal vs. self theme that will become the meat of the novel.

They are both canon to each other and F/SN. It could not be any more explicitly clear.

Well on a pure synopsis level that's what happens, so I don't mean to mislead you that the VN will differ significantly in that regard, it's more that Saber's reason for dropping her goals have to do with her realizing that a) the goals she has are not unambiguously 'hers' (foreshadowing that Shirou's superhero goals is not unambiguously 'his' either) and b) that there is more to life that just simple utilitarianism/'sacrificing one for the many'/pragmatism/what have you (paralleling how Kerry's utilitarianism broke down in F/Z). I'm in the minority opinion again here, but I think the sex scene/dragon scene in the forest is where you can see Saber's turn really start to surface; Saber tries to rationalize the experience along a pragmatic lens for the rest of the novel, but at the end she realizes that the experience was more than simply goal-oriented behavior, and thus implicitly that there are somethings more important 'her' goals.

At least she got a happy ending with Shiro in HF. In Fate and UBW, Shinji, the root of her suffering, either dies or becomes a better person. Kariya got no happy ending. The ones he cares about, Sakura and her mom gave no fuck about him or even misunderstood him. He got fucked up physically by Tokiomi and mentally by Kirei. His servant Lancelot could've killed Artoria if he hadnt run out of mana. After losing the war, he could've run away but he chose to come back to save Sakura no matter what just to get eaten by the worms while Sakura heartlessly said that he shouldnt go against Zouken

Not at all. She's not as proper a magus as her father. Tokiomi was a magus to the bone, but for Rin, the title of a magus was like a "mask" that she wore. Whenever things got tough, she became a "magus" who would do anything to get the job done without hesitation or mercy. But the thing is, that mask is flimsy as fuck. It always falls apart at the worst possible moment. That's why she wasn't able to kill Sakura even though she was fully able to. She can't totally kill her emotions, she can only stifle them superficially with her title as a "magus".

She's always like that, and it's one of the principle reasons why she keeps fucking up at the last second in anything she does. Her lies seems solid at first but the fall apart under pressure. If Rin had two kids and had to give one up, I don't think she'd be able to. She'd talk about doing it, make all sorts of excuses for why she has to do it, file the paperwork and everything, but at the very last second, she wouldn't be able to go through with it. At that point, she'd simply work twice as hard to keep both her kids safe, even if it'd be really rough. She can emulate Tokiomi but she can't become Tokiomi.

Even Shirou has stronger mentality as a magus than her. She always talks about killing people, but Rin's hands are always clean in every right. A proper magus would have simply killed Shinji in UBW. She owes him nothing, warned him over and over that things wouldn't turn out well for him and had every reason to kill him since it would stop the Grail. But she insisted on saving him. She's way too soft. She's even softer than Shirou.

Yes, and the scene from the LN is in the description of the video, which is based on the drama CD. The anime contradicts the LN and the other adaptations.

Lancelot can't kill Zouken. Breaking his body isn't the same as killing him. You can clash his body into a thousand pieces and he'd still survive.

Zouken controls the worms. The moment Kariya starts doing anything magical, he could sense it, and immediately kill both Sakura and Kariya.

There also when Shinji goes after the school in UBW, she is far more freaked out than Shirou. The anime doesn't convey this well if I remember, but Shirou was the one actually leading when Bloodfort triggered. Rin was almost too panicked to act, that was also when she really started to get how messed up Shirou is.

I don't think she is less of a magnus than Shirou though. Tohsaka is interested in studying magic for the sake of it, like all mages even if she really doesn't have the attitude and values of a mage. Shirou wants to use his magic to save others, magic for any other purpose is irrelevant to him

I meant in terms of mentality. The thing is, Rin is able to act like a magus in difficult situations, but her mask slips at critical moments. Emiya Shirou, on the other hand, is able to do what he needs to do at the most critical of moments without the slightest hesitation. Remember when he was about to kill Shinji in the Fate route in order to shut down the Blood Fort? Rin might have hesitated, but Shirou was definitely gonna do it. That's the critical difference between the two of them. In fact, the hero Emiya is a perfect example of this. He did exactly what he needed to do perfectly, whatever it took to achieve his goals. There's not much common ground between an Ally of Justice and a Magus, but if there is one, it's the mentality. You can't hesitate, you have to give everything to the pursuit of that goal and you can't take any detours.

Also, remember what Rin said to Shinji in Heavens Feel:

Mages have a mental "switch" to activate their actual magic circuits, but he doesn't know that so he creates an artificial circuit out of a nerve every time he trains. Kiritsugu either never caught on to that fact or simply didn't teach the proper method in the hope Shirou just gives up magic.

Shirou's mental switch is the hammer of a gun being cocked, which he learns later. He has actually an above average number of magic circuits, but they are basically of trash quality.

FGO is shit though, and so is the concept of Shilldo Servants.
