It definitely has problems, but it's still one of the better seasons. Not the best, like its OP is, but in no way a bad show.
Almost all of HaCha's problems are times that it tried to break the Precure mold and kinda failed at it, but you can tell it meant well and I have a hard time faulting it because of that. Things like the botched romances and the underused international Cures, I mean.
Then the show's other good parts outweigh the bad, like Hime being unreasonably cute, the designs and direction being top-tier, and the battles being fantastic. I loved almost every episode of HaCha.

When Kamen Rider W started there was a very obvious "2" theme what with the name(W, Double), the 2-in-1 rider thing, using two memories to transform etc.
Then OOO came and there was a 3 theme that wasn't as all-encompassing but still there considering you needed three medals to transform, there were three sections of each combo, three of each medal for each section etc.
Then Fourze which still had the main character using four switches to transform but other than that it wasn't really a focus and even then it was probably still only there at that point because it was the 40th anniversary
By the time of Wizard it wasn't a factor in the franchise but a lot of people still pushed that it was supposed to be the "5" season for one reason or another. Most common excuse I heard was because he used his hand to activate the belt (that year's gimmick were magic rings) and hands have five fingers.
Most people moved on from then but I still saw people saying (in earnest, though there were trolls too because of just how stupid it was) that Gaim was somehow a "6" because the opened lockseeds looked like sixes. After that I don't really remember anything outside of the occasional joke in a discussion thread saying stuff like "Ghost has two eyecons, two eyecons together looks like an 8, NUMBER THEORY CONFIRMED" or something like that but even that's pretty much died off by the time of Ex-Aid.

I really doubt Madoka was an afterthought just because her entire character concept seems too entwined with the inevitable endgame regarding the Earth half of the story.
That said I could totally believe, even if it's just speculation, that when they were creating her Cure design they either didn't have any better ideas than a sun/moon motif or did the moon thing and thought "shit, we need a sun too don't we" and Elena exists just for that sake. She really doesn't seem to add anything to the show besides another character for kids to buy merch of.

I don't know how I feel about Yukari yet. She didn't really do much in her own introductory episode, and it's not yet clear to me if her super-perfection is going to go anywhere or only exists to enable her to chuckle at those around her.
Not doing much is related to why I haven't taken to Himari or Aoi yet too, I think. Himari at least serves as a plot device and has expressed emotions, even if they weren't in-depth, but Aoi... They just sort of brushed past the part where they even made friends with her and started hanging out. She's just there now.

I do use the Precure wiki for this, mainly just because it's convenient, but in the process of subbing the musicals I have absolutely noticed mistakes both in the Japanese transcription and the romaji on multiple songs -- not to mention the wildly nonsense English translations on just about all of them. For me Yes5 just lacked a honest-to-god declaration of love, either from Nozomi or Komachi to cement what they were setting up. The boat scene was a perfect moment for that but I got blueballed hard by that. GoGo isn't better than Yes5 in that department, "for me" GoGo is better than Yes5 just in the OP/ED/dress/stock footage department, everything else was way worse.

Is it still possible to acquire any of the Chinese dubs? I have a friend who is watching stuff in Chinese to further her studies. Apparently, how it worked was the Chinese dub would be legally uploaded to youtube as region locked videos and later taken down. If you go to the official Taiwan facebook page you'll see lots of dead youtube links along with some comments from people complaining about not being able to watch them anymore.
So, are the Chinese dubs basically now lost films of sorts? I have done searching and all I've found is the occasional small clip here and there.
And yes, I am aware that a Chinese knockoff of Pretty Cure called Balala The Fairies exists. I've seen it, and it sucks.

It seems the Chinese weebs, as in the people who torrent and share on forums don't really care about the dubs because the dubs did stuff like change the character's names to Chinese names and maybe other changes. The Chinese streaming sites I've found Pretty Cure series on always have them in Japanese with Chinese subtitles. An example of Chinese name changing in dubs would be like how in the Chinese dub of Yu-Gi-Oh, Yugi was renamed to Youxi.

The previous year it was announced that Precure was going to be one of the anime mascots for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and Toei in their infinite wisdom decided to put Mirai and Riko there as the mascots as Maho was airing at the time.
Realising after the fact that Maho would have ended 4 years and 4 seasons before the 2020 Olympics, Toei paniced and decided to just constantly have the Mahos show up in subsequent seasons to ensure they were still somewhat relevant to the franchise.
Until last year where they just gave up and replaced the Mahos with Cure Yell in the advertising, which they'll likely do again next year with the 2020 series which'll end up being the one that is on the bulk of the Olympic media and merchandise
