French fries, refined sugar, white rice are all simple carbs.
Whole grain bread, oats, peas are complex carbs.
The ONLY time you can take a simple carb is right before training because you might need a quick injection of glucose if you haven't been eating properly all day.

Protein actually digests much slower, so it will keep you full longer which means that you wont eat as quick as you used to.
There's a reason why we have so many protein rich diets and zero diets in which people focus solely on carbs.
As for the rest, it's still *calories in, calories out*: meaning that if you manage to take in 4000 calories of protein (which is an insane amount) you will get fat, because you've stored more calories than you can use.

I started lifting 4 years ago after I recovered from a benign bone tumor. Sitting in that hospital bed, naked, seeing how weak and ugly my body was, and how a sedentary lifestyle of sitting at a computer chair all day put me there (Tumor was believed to have been caused by excessive sitting), I had enough of letting the world control me, so I started lifting to be what I wanted to be.

To this day, it was one of the best decisions of my life, and lifting is now one of my favorite hobbies. I lift for health, physical/mental strength, the community (Fitness community is full of autistic outcasts and bros), better appearance, and for fun. Everyone should workout, fitness is a necessary part of your body's maintenance and isn't optional like we've been taught by fat and lazy boomers.

I began with doing push ups and sit ups ever since I was 14 thanks to Bruce Lee.
Started martial arts at 15.
Went to the gym on and off for years, sometimes because of injury due to bad form and sometimes because my job required me to travel way too long/far.

generally you eat 1 hour before a workout, make sure to get carbs (since they're your fuel) and drink a lot of water all throughout the day, especially before and after your workout. during, you should only take small sips after heavy sets.

They're great for beginners, people who are too out of shape, children and teens, people who have injuries but need a safer way to exercise, or as an accessory to your main lifts. They definitely are inferior to bar training though due to increasing resistance being in the form of very limiting progressions and how much you weigh, while with bars you can just add on any amount of weight at any time AND change form/technique at the same time.

I do mostly dumbbell work with some barbell and bodyweight. I recommend you just find what works for you, but generally you're going to want to incorporate a healthy variance of as many things that'll give you the best results. So experiment and see what works, just avoid crossfit though.
