Umm... Ouch... Okay, so, I want as many people as possible to like Slayers, but the rule of thumb for short anime is that after the third episode, if you're not interested, you should just drop it. If you're seven episodes in... Slayers just isn't for you.

Well, yes and no. While it could be argued that the seasons are disjointed, my point is that if you don't feel gripped by the setting now, there's no point in investing further into something you don't really care about. Episodes 1 through 10 of the first season constitute roughly the first volume, out of fifteen, for the light novels.
Basically my point is, if you don't like The Hobbit, why read the entire Tolkien anthology? If you don't like The Eye of the World, why read the entire Wheel of Time series? If you don't like the very first part of Slayers, why subject yourself to the rest of it?

This is good reasoning, but I find that there are a few exceptions. I hated Yuru Yuri for the first three episodes, but then all of a a sudden I started to love it. Every once in a while it's good to finish something you don't like, if only to step outside your comfort zone. And you might end up liking that thing you thought you hated.

How far did Lina ever get with Gourry anyways? It was always teased at and I recall in the one movie where their speech got scrambled she was getting big time flustered over him saying "I love you" repeatedly. Did they ever end up having any actual romantic moments though?

Anime: NEXT gave them the spinning kiss scene they forgot about, TRY showed they implicitly trust each other, and filler in Evo-R implied they love each other, even if they haven't admitted it.
Manga: Lina and Gourry care deeply for each other, but Lina is also more feminine (relatively) and Gourry is more chivalrous.
Rui Araizumi: Ships them HARD.
Fans: Still a toss-up between Gourry, Zel, and Xellos, but Zel is meant for Amelia and Xellos literally cannot be a romantic interest by virtue of being a mazoku.

so like 3 weeks ago you recommended slayers to me Yea Forums annnd im trying to watching it in the canon chronological order? Where they recommend watching with the character Naga. But it feels off. Can't put my finger on it... It's like they're goofing off a lot. But not going anywhere, and it feels like I somehow jumped into the middle of the story. I don't know if I'm supposed to know about how their magic works, or what Lina does.
I temporarily put it on hold, but I might pick it back up this week. I'm sure it does get really good because.
i just want to say, i love the animation. Lina is cute as a fucking button. Absolutely destroys Akko as far as being cute and a magic user, of about the same age. Naga is sexy as hell, and her armor rules... Their use of magic is interesting, but I haven't watched much else.

In the light novels, Naga is introduced later in the spin-off Slayers Special. SS takes place before Slayers proper, but because the core story had already been established, there's not as much world-building in SS as their is in the "core" LNs.
Similarly, the OVAs and movies don't build the world of Slayers up more than the context needs to be for the episode they're in. This is porbably why you feel like you're missing something, but don't fret. You will get to proper world-building in time. If you want, you can watch them all by release date instead.
