That is entirely subjective. The Normans literally destroyed the Varagians during their war with Emperor Alexius Komenos. The Varagians broke ranks and lunged into the Norman line and got surrounded and butchered, this caused the entire line to fall apart and nearly got the Emperor captured. Alexius only escaped by getting his horse to leap like a fucking goat along a cliff face while being attacked by Norman spears. The few Varagians that survived the butchery gathered in a church at the top of a hill and barricaded the doorway. The Normans just lit it on fire and roasted the rest of them alive. The Varagians were loyal and utterly devoid of fear but that made them reckless and hard to wield in combat. The moment the Normans get on the historical stage they become the dominate military force in Europe, not just in England, but in Sicily as well.

The manga I would say is realistic, more so than the Vikings show, except for the obvious super vikings. Thors' fight scenes are the most OP in the entire series though, to show he's just about the strongest man in Europe.

I personally think having the flashback first is better. The first few manga chapters felt more like a typical shounen to show how angry and strong teen Thorfinn is (obviously since VS started off in a weekly shounen magazine) and you KNEW the moment Thors appeared that he'd die at Askeladd's hands. The flashback in the manga was still good but it didn't feel that important.
Meanwhile, starting with Thors and focusing on Thorfinn's childhood (and seeing how he goes from innocent kid to killing machine in the next few episodes) is more interesting because you connect more with Thors's character as a main character rather than some dad figure who died in the past. Same reason why (sorry for this Yea Forums shit reference) Ned Stark's death in GOT was more impactful; if he only appeared in a flashback then you wouldn't care as much about him.

Prologue was great, although Thorfinn really did fade into the background once Canute grew balls.
Farmland was great, although Thorfinn turning from edgy killing machine to reserved/quiet guy to an outspoken moral dude felt a little disjointed.
Post-farmland turned to shit the moment Gudrid appeared and shoved Einar into the background. Felt super awkward since Einar went from being a main character to a side character who barely says anything anymore. Not to mention Thorfinn's some casual guy now and everyone else is forgettable.

It really comes across as someone that drastically wanted to change things up or accelerate a process simply because he started a family (which the author did).
It's not a natual progression to this arc, it's not a natrual character evolution and most of the things that happen during this arc is plagued by pacing issues or just comes across as downright stupid (like taking all those punches and the author then trying to pain it as badass or as something they would actually be in awe of). They in particular would not change their tune that quickly, especially by something like that.

Speedewatcher-kun, did you forget the fjord was blocked by debris? The ship wasn't going anywhere. There was nowhere to swim either, they were in a narrow fjord with steep cliffs on either side and the main exit was blocked. Fleeing the ship would mean discarding their weapons and armor, their only means of defending themselves.

And Thors was a committed pacifist. It's just that he misjudged what Askeladd's aims were. He thought he was a common pirate looking for plunder, and thus could be intimidated and reasoned with, but once he realized Askeladd was hired to kill him, he knew the game was up. They were trapped, badly outnumbered, and their enemy had archers on the cliffs in perfect position to rain death at any second. He knew then his only hope for saving his people was to appeal to Askeladd's honor.

Pretty much around where this series is set. It wasn't really an abrupt end, more of a gradual die off. The consolidation of Scandinavia into stable, Christian kingdoms caused the old raiding culture to eventually fall away. But because of how far flung Viking settlements and predations had gone, there were still many small pockets of raiding culture and petty chieftains, but the "age" was virtually over by the time Canut the Great died.

In general, Viking society was massively overhauled by Christianity. End of slavery, end of raiding and pillaging as a way of life, death of the old warrior culture that once dominated life. But I agree, it's interesting because the music isn't like regular anime soundtracks where composers make stand-alone themes that the sound director then inserts here and there in the episode to "match" scenes. Here it feels more subtle which makes the show feel more grounded in reality, and also make the characters' dialogue have more weight.

Overall feels more like a movie than a generic tv anime.
