Nah she doesn't need recasting or anything like that, just some development, which we're probably gonna get. They didn't fuck up, we've known the other characters for a while longer and it took some time before we really got to know what was up with Yuri or Nemo.

She had a lot of good potential as makeup-chan but now she just comes off as bland and uninteresting since the ambiguously gay joke has been played to death. It would be fine if she was used sparingly as a supporting character like Akane instead of as a main girl. She's been the focus of a lot of recent developments in the manga yet she still feels lacking in personality and characterisation compared to Yuri and Nemo. And let's face it, one of the reasons why she appears more prominently in merchandise while Komi and Yoshida get shafted is because she is increasingly being used as a yuribait character. I didn't have much of a problem with Asuka initially but the groping chapter was a real 'jump the shark' moment as it was so jarring and out of place considering the tone of the manga at that point.

I wish Akane was a main girl. She's such a fun character to read and her comedic reactions are pretty hilarious when played off against Nemo and Tomoko's antics. Much better than Asuka, Komi-shit or Fuuka (I swear to God this bitch better not get her own solo chapter, single worst character in this manga)

Even the lip balm chapter that supposedly "confirms" her bisexuality was merely the set up for a joke, the joke being that Tomoko is so woefully ignorant of female interaction that she assumes normal behaviour among high school girls was actually gay subtext. But it doesn't matter because Nico gave Tomoko a fucking ridiculous girl crush on Asuka that ruins all the other good aspects of the new direction of the series.

You're only reading the earlier chapters of the manga with a skewered bias towards yuri because of the recent changes and refusing to acknowledge the inherently comedic (yet endearing) aspect of the manga related to Tomoko's social experience. Also just about every lewd thought Tomoko had pre-trip involved the male sex. She had limited interactions with other girls and was well established to have an overactive imagination, quick to jump to the wrong conclusions and being generally oblivious to a lot of things. I think you just want Tomoko to be gay for your own selfish reasons even if it doesn't serve the properly tone of the manga.

Nothing at all! I love Asuka. The people who hate her literally admit to skipping anything she does and wanting to dislike her so it's not the most trustworthy of opinions. She's pretty much a walking thesis of WataMote in that she regularly defies expectation and possesses a lot of agency, but with intriguing mysterious motivation. You literally only ever see people saying the same things to criticize her (she's bland, and she's taking up too much of the manga) yet most of the fanbase adores her and the new direction, and she doesn't actually appear very much in chapters. In fact that's part of her appeal: she ISN'T given a lot of focus.

Which is a dumb "problem". That's Imae's "problem", but I guess the defense for that would be that Imae never "overstays her welcome".

It's not as if every character has to have some second, crippling side, and it's neat how in terms of flaws the issue with Asuka seems to be "is more controlling and selfish than she realizes", which is similar to Yuri but without the passive aggression (she tends to be direct about what issues she has) and with more self-doubt.

I think it's dumber to ignore that Tomoko herself edges on realizing she wants to fuck girls but is in such a thick level of denial that she simply no-sells it when she genuinely considers the idea.

It's fine to want to fuck both types. If she was simply desperate for affection, every girl would affect her. On the contrary, she has a clear "type", something people like to ignore a lot for some reason. The type is "hot guys/girls", and the only time we've ever seen her truly desperate for affection such that she ignored everything else, it was for a boy.

Even if she has a type she didn't even like Asuka at first. This is something else people ignore a lot: how she only got her crush on Asuka after several events and one surrogate dick shoved in her mouth by a certain fox.

Just ignore them, They've been repeating the same things over and over again for the past year. If it makes them mad that you like a part of the manga they hate, then awesome.
