I think the key point missing from the original is that the original wasn't fantasy, it was real but kinda has this aura of being slightly fantastical, almost nichijou-like, like there might not be giant tuna falling out of the sky to battle but you could imagine Shark Girl thinking there is and going after them, which is way better I think than actually making that kind of plot for real
