Yeah, that's been the general complaint so far. Farmland was kino and each of the side characters like Einar, Ketil, his father and two sons, that slavegirl and her husband all had meaningful character arcs that all reflected that whole arc's theme about the cycle of violence and its glorification vs rejection in a Viking society. The Baltic War, even ignoring the comedy hijinx and some of the cringey stuff like the shonen villain parody, comes nowhere near close to that.

I will say that the smaller "The Fettered Tern" storyline revolving Halfdan's family and Gudrid has been pretty good with regards to how it deals with the theme of obligation vs individual choice in a traditional society that places premium on family-based honour. In a way, it's sort of Yukimura coming back to tie up the original conflict we saw all the way back in the beginning when Halfdan talking to Thors about how he believes men can be best tied down by brute force and rules.

I do hope the next arc will be better plotted and paced. I'll be pretty disappointed if we don't get something good in a storyline involving the Rus vikings or Varangians.

The more philosophical chapters orientated around moral obligation or societal values have also felt laid on really thickly lately. I enjoyed Farmland Saga and some of the set-up chapters for the Baltic Sea War but nothing in the latter is done as well as the initial arc in England. The Vikings murdering civilians, the priest and Cnut's revelations, etc. all got across the point much more effectively.

Of course, the manga had much more room at that point. Though I don't feel it's ever adapted that well to slower pacing.

Man, what is Yukimura thinking with this arc and chapter? This really feels like the beginning of a Berserk-esque deterioration with the manga becoming more and more filled with out-of-place hijinx and tropes.

By the way, I don't remember seeing this Hatt character before, but people are saying this is her return, so when did she first appear?

Might be my interpretation but His plan for VS seems to be something like

People always call you edgy but my problem is never the content itself but that it is part of another series to which it fits 0 and that I just want the old series to stay the same and the author to start another one for the new stuff they have in mind.

I think the main argument against this is Yukimura has stated serval times that he always intended for the series to change as Thorfinn did.
Sure you can argue that so far he's poorly handled that idea, or even that it's a stupid one regardless.
But it's kinda asinine to assume that yukimura was almost done with the prologue and decided to turn it into a "shonen" as a cheap plot twist (and if that was the case, why even call it vinland saga if Thorfinn was gonna stay in Europe killing who ever he wanted with no plans to return to Iceland and later vinland)
