i thought she was a great foil to shinji in 1 and 2. here's a character who is reluctant to do anything, why me, no one cares, i don't wanna, now here's another character who takes everything in stride and is perfectly content doing what she's told. coincidentally, or maybe exactly because of that, people tell her and she also knows more of what's going on.

I think it has something to do with the philosophy of the show. I just finished rebuild 1-3, and I can say with confidence, it was intentionally meant to be trash.

Notice how all the charecters suddenly become aware of their faults? Asuka even talking about how "hurr Durr normally I'm so distant from people, but maybe there is some good in actually being open and honest with people" and then she gets murked. All those random character tropes in 3.0.

It leads me to believe that the directed is using his medium of 'alternate realities' or a repeating cycle, to give us a show where all those fanboys wanted some dumb best girl tropes, and charecters realizations, just to show us how shitty it would actually be.

One of my favorite things in the series, was how at the end, you can realize that all those lewd moments and hormone induced edgiesness, actually served a purpose to give a realistic basis for shinji's lust. It's poetry desguised as fan service.

However, the fan service in the rebuild series after 2.0, is purely fan service, theres no real reasoning behind it. At first, I thought all they toxic people who don't care for ambiguous story telling, finally took ahold of the narrative. I was greatly disappointed with it as a whole. But, after a while, it occurred to me, maybe the director actually is giving us a philosophical message, while simultaneously producing "the anime you wanted" kind of thing. In comparison, rebuild 1 follows the story to a tee basically, giving fans that hd condenced remake they wanted for modern nostalgia. Then 2.0 derives completely with new cast and some basic tropes. 3.0, it's complete garbage, with the side charecters being so depthlss, you get their whole personality the second you see them open on screen. There's no longer any intrinsic humanity inside of them, and the cast begins to loose their depth aswell. The whole point of the human instramentality project was so people could connect, and understand one another.

Yet, as the rebuild series goes on, people start to do that on their own. There's a huge reality in not beIN able to ever truely express yourself to others, which in turn causes confusion and chaise, something that gives maning to life as we try to move on from living that way.

in the rebuild series, it just forsakes that philosophy. It does a complete 180 on the purpose of the series. If there was a different director takin over the rebuild, I would have assumed the series is just over, but since it's the same director, I think that he is intentionally trying to reaffirm the underlying messages from the older film's, but only doing it in the modern anime world, in reference to the past film's.

In short; I think that Mari and rebuild in general, is a manifestation of our desires for escapism. It's pretty much a generic anime, and I think that's to show how what we believe to be escapism, is just a 2d depthless reflection of reality that leaves us feeling empty.

opposed to the escapism that was originally portrayed with the cast, where people are using it to better understand reality, but because of the disconnect from your soul, you'll never truely understand what it is you're looking for. Like misato being a filthy cumslut, but not realizing until the end that it's because she had an actual desire to be filthy, because she hated having to be a dignified person for the world.

I think the director making the rebuild trash is basically telling his artistic fans "even in trying to understand yourself, you're still just trying to escape from yourself". If the anime was good, and had a coherent ending, we'd be done. There'd no longer be lingering questions within ourselves. But because the rebuild was trash, we're rehashing the same questions and anxieties we had during EoE. I have hope that the 4th movie is gonna revert back to it's original tellings of philosophy, I refuse to believe the actual depth of the story is going to be bouncing anime boobs and jumping the shark. But, if that's what the world does to good things when they find it, maybe I can see why shinji and pals would actually want the human instramentality project to happen after everything is said and done.

In the manga she's a friend of Yui who was afflicted by the "curse of EVA" somehow.
In the novel she's some sort of hybrid human/animal clone with a connection to Asuka's parents or Asuka herself, not sure. She has actual cat ears under the head accessory in this version.
In Rebuild she's just a fanservice character who got thrown in because Anno liked her.
