Indeed, the original 25/26 are both set in an atemporal timeline. The film's interpretation of the instrumentality is different to the series' one.

Eva was never really about the mech fights.
Aside from the brief bout with the Kaworu controlled Unit-02, Shinji does basically zero fighting after Unit-01 got its S2 engine.

The last angel Shinji even helped defeat without Yui doing it for him, dummy plugs, or the angel letting him execute an assisted suicide was all the way back in episode 12, less than halfway through the whole series.

Shinji also acts like a 'shadow' of Asuka's subconscious. She desperately wants love and affection but will never blatantly admit it to herself, hence why she pushes others away and acts mightier than thou in an attempt to prove her superiority. Shinji is the opposite. He openly and meekly begs for affection from everybody and anybody. He wants the same thing Asuka wants, but she is too proud to admit it. shinji, who feels socially isolated, alone and unworthy of acknowledgement becomes nihilistic due to the circumstances of his life and how he truly feels, he comes to the conclusion that he is willing to accept love from anyone even when he doesn't know them because he simply wants to be acknowledged, but by default this means that his altruism is a result of him not loving himself and is fake, he can't love himself, and he is willing to love anyone at all who will acknowledge him there for he actually loves no one, he then mentally believes that if he trys to seek acknowledgement he will simply be rejected (dream sequence where asuka rejects him), he then becomes fully nihilistic and comes to the conclusion that if no one accept him and acknowledge him then there is no point to living, everyone should just die and he should just die

this is how he reaches his decision to unite everyone as one and remove rejection and loneliness, but upon doing so he realizes that he is just escaping from reality and although his anxiety and pain of loneliness and rejection doesn't exist, it is simply not real, so he returns everyone from being united within instrumentality back to being human and seeks to be validated by asuka in reality (does the same thing as in his dream, he chokes her because he believes she won't acknowledge him) (ill continue)

the whole show was basically anno's critique of social life and finding your own identity, it was in a way a commentary on otaku culture in japan, the theme was that escapism leads to an unfulfilling life, he designed all the characters to have unfulfilled lives that were caused by escape mechanisms, his morale was basically that people put on social facades and try to distance themselves from their true feelings and escape reality, but if you accept how you truly feel and try to connect with others and face the pain of rejection in the face of ambiguity you can find connection with others and lead a more fufilling life while being able to express your identity, trying to mask who you truly are may be more comfortable but it isn't real
the irony in this is instead of understanding or embracing annos message, eva blew up and people use the series it's self as a means to delve into escapism which is what the whole series is geared towards warning people against

tl;dr - surface level it's about aliens and humans fighting to gain power but when it boils down it was a show about being yourself and how expressing how you really feel and trying to go out and have a life will make your life better even though it is more ambiguous and painful, hiding from reality although more comfortable makes your life worse

Good post. I'd say the 'disgusting' is probably a bit more ambiguous though. Her feeling disgust at showing her true feelings and acceptance towards another, basically being vulnerable, is definitely a big part of it. But I would also think it's due in part of her realizing how Shinji used her body as a sex doll selfishly instead of trying to connect with her throughout the series because of his fear of rejection. Also just the general state of the world they exist in now. It's probably a culmination of all these things as opposed to only her feeling disgust at admitting her actual feelings.

I was trying to sum it up with a bit less detail, but I think it didn't have much to do with shinji masturbating, but more him choking her represented his inability to be honest with his feelings, he chokes her for acknowledgement instead of being honest with how he feels (he wants acknowledgement)

Always found it cool how they finally break the coping mechanisms they've had at that scene.
Shinji, who has been hiding away and running away from rejection all his life, is now initiating it and facing rejection head on.
Asuka, who had put on a mask all her life in an attempt to never show her true feelings and need for compassion, instead always pushing away when on the verge of realizing her need for affection, instead reaches out with love and acceptance.

Their characters finally come full circle and it leaves a bit of hope for the two of them. They've shown that they can break their mental conditioning/coping mechanisms and that there is hope for happiness and acceptance in the future.
