The animation and art style get a lot better after the first season. Season 1 was a passion project with little hope of future seasons going forward. Only after season 1 becoming a unexpected success is when they got a better budget for later seasons.

Season 1 of Symphogear is amazing. Plebs complain that it's disjointed and weirdly animated but most of the weird animation is in the first few episodes and the plot is consistent, it just ramps up a lot harder than most other shows.
S2 is less good, probably because they never expected the series to be popular enough to get a S2, but it's still solid.
S3 is horrific and S4 is a mess of wasted potential.

First season was definitely more edgy, and had the kind of rough edge that shows that don't entirely know what they want to be feel... in a good way.

In retrospect Chris realistically behaved like a kid forced to do bad things by her mom

So everyone treats you like crap for your entire life and there the one person you have to fight because your master tells you to.
It's the stupidest nicest girl who tries to get to know you and makes the first move which does trigger the insecurities she has and after that the girl who Chris almost killed saves her and helps her after being abandoned

This. I just recently binged all of Symphogear and I enjoyed the fuck out of all seasons, even if GX/AXZ were not as amazing.

Of course in general I also tend to enjoy a series more when I watch it all the way through in one sitting, rather than week-to-week. With Symphogear maybe that effect is amplified because of how it's constantly ramping the action up, like the anime equivalent of a rising Shepard tone

AXZ really, really fucking sucked to watch week to week. Episode 1 was amazing so you're hyped. By the time shit actually got going they had just wasted so much time.

Season 1 is the only season I thoroughly loved all the way through. I was always super invested and got crazy hype whenever some new cool shit would happen. G is still good but a step down and GX and AXZ are slightly varying levels of meh. XV is better than both of them already but even if I like it more than G by the end I don't think anything will ever beat the first one for me.

I think that GX is a bit overhated, yeah it had a lot of issues (especially concerning Hibiki) but contrary to what people say it did have a lot of character development (DMJii learning to reach out to others, Maria learning to BEE URSELF, Chris taking on a senpai role).

I think that G is the weakest season overall, it had some great moments but as a story it's easily the weakest due to its obsession with cliffhangers and the story bending over backwards to let Ver (bless his soul) do whatever he wanted.
