Yeah, the architecture is stunning. The characters not so much. And you say you got attached to them...? Guess I didn't read much.

Did you read scans? Fixed blacks version or what?

I find Nihei's character designs and expressions pretty endearing. I read the Master edition with fixed blacks, everything was clear to me in terms of art/direction.

If I didn't know Nihei's people all looked a bit fugly I would have said that the weird faces and proportions were intentional, since the characters are barely human in the first place.
Now I just know that Nihei is better at architecture than anatomy by miles. He's also only meh at stories. He's great at the starting premise and building out a setting, but executing even a coherent, let alone good, story is a bit beyond him.

Still, the architecture porn is enough to make me read everything he puts out. Even Aposimz is okay if you take the idea the art direction and lack of blacks is supposed to reflect the snow and cold environment.

I love Blame! Have you read Noise and Net Sphere Engineer?

I've always thought blame! was supposed to be continued with that timeskip\alternative engineer series that's always listed as "on hiatus" every time I do a check on it on some sites. there is a lot of Nihei derivative works tied into blame, so I suppose open ending was intentionally also a cliffhanger so the op feeling is nothing irregular. there's a hope that maybe someday he will even make some kind of a sequel or something like noise\nse because I find that all his unrelated other works are going downhill for quite some time. biomega is still great but beyond that there is a steady decline in his works of what made me appreciate him as mangaka

Living in the megastructure must be a nightmare. Just imagine you're trying to travel in the megastructure. You take one turn down a path through a doorthat takes a year or two to go down with side streets, pipes, stairs, cracks in the wall, chasms, clausterphobic tunnels, and entire bodies of water only to end up in a dead end. You double back and take one of those side paths to end up in another dead end. So you repeat this over and over again spending years running into dead ends. Turns out you're basically in a pocket of the megastructure that is completely shut off from the rest only accessible through that door you entered all those years ago. By the time you make it back to that door you discover a builder has came by and reworked that door into a wall. You're trapped. Sure you got a entire continent's worth of infrastructure to yourself but you are not free to travel anywhere. You also noticed you haven't encountered anything intelligent since you entered that door.

I think Sidonia was a competent work and actually told a complete story for once. Aposimz is kind of all over the place, comparatively and the art is... different from his old style. I still think it's a stylistic choice, and one that works, but I definitely prefer the deep blacks of Blame.

Nihei's stories have never been his strong suit anyway. His work is excellent in concept; The City as a setting is amazing and he has the skills to show it off in his art, Sidonia's ship is an excellent idea, and shows some nice harder science fiction ideas off. Abara and Biomega just seem like continual refining of the same rough ideas that he's doing again in Aposimz. It's telling a complete story with those concepts where he falls short I think

I think I've never felt as miserable reading a manga as I did reading the end of chapter 64 onwards, and I do like my bleak and depressing stories from time to time. Despite, or perhaps partially because of that it still stands out in my mind as one of the closest things to a masterpiece in the entire medium. Man what a read. Or look rather, there wasn't an absolute ton of dialogue.

Blam! really was the perfect story for him.
Even Sidonia was alright, despite just being a generic battle harem in a Nihei world.

Reminder that killy has to walk back all over again and now he has a kid to protect and on top of it he is handicapped(legcapped).

Killy had a hard life.

Probably did, it just took forever to do it and he had to go prosthetic until it was fully regrown. His regenerative powers are exceptional but still take time.

By the end of the series, enough time has passed that his body is starting to fall apart, and his regeneration was never all that fast in the first place.

He got fucked after losing body mass. It literally took 14.5 years to repair and reboot his brain.

That wasn't just his brain but his whole body after being nearly vaporized by a star like furnace, my guess is that his body has a failsafe that shuts down his brain to focus on healing his body enough to move again

I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect, but it just felt a bit inconclusive. In the last colored panel of the Master edition I think it showed a regenerated Killy with the Net Terminal Gene kid, really wish we could see a volume or two about their adventures together, especially since he didn't get much in the way of closure with Cibo.

He managed to regenerate his entire body after being nearly melted by Safeguard Cibo and his mission being succesful is thanks to the Netsphere Engineer and Pcell² gaiden chapters showing that the kid grows up and is going around deactivating the Safeguard terminals while Killy is going around helping anyone being attacked by the Safeguard, even Silicon life

God, the expression on the silicon life girl kills me every time.

Well, I only read it online, previously on Batoto and now on MD, but I've read it like 3 times over at least, with how little is explained in the series this really is one of those that you need to research, read the prequels/sequels/oneshot spinoffs/etc to learn all you can about the lore then read again for all the details you missed and understand the plot. The Netflix adaptation is a bit different, but still worth a watch.

I always recommend people to focus on the plot starting from Vol 2, since that's when the major plot points and art really starts getting fleshed out.
If you got any questions about the plot I guess I can give a shot at answering them.

One thing I like about Blame is how Nihei doesn't elaborate on a lot of things, the mystery makes it fun to speculate. Like Killy and Sanakan's time working together in the Safeguard.

Biomega was peak artwork, but the ending felt really rushed. Also bear-kun is great.

Killy is basically a cybernetic modified police officer who has been fighting the silicon folk since before the expansion of the megacomplex took over the planet.

My personal theory on the matter is that he is partially integrated into the megastructure itself, and that the body he uses is mostly just a physical avatar. Because of this, the further away from the center of the megastructure he gets, the harder it is for him to regenerate and such, in much the same way that the representative of the governing agency mentions that it is harder to materialize in the further reaches of the city because literally the circuitry just gets corrupted and skewed the farther out you go.

Nihei's best work. I haven't read his latest manga, but I remember being disappointed by Sidonia. It's great that he's gotten a lot more recognition now, but it seems that he's traded his esoteric quality for something more mass-appealing which I get. It sells more. Sidonia felt way more like a standard Shounen. Still though, there's plenty of Nihei's early work to enjoy.

As far as Blame! goes, I love it because it's so good at world-building while still retaining this dreadful and silent atmosphere. It's basically a pre-Dark Souls in that regard but even more mysterious.

Imagine having to traverse a staircase for weeks, relying off a dwindling food supply desperately hoping for a settlement soon. Crawl through pipes for hours upon hours to pop out into a identical room that you left before. It takes you a week to notice a change in the infrastructure letting you know you actually made some progress. Imagine being in a large cavern where you can see a human settlement on the other side but because of the infrastructure of the megastructure it takes you a half year to get there and by the time you get there silicon life have wiped out all humans and left a long time ago. You can wander for a long time until you find the corpse of a person that starved because they wandered far too long before finding a place to resupply, you can't tell which he came from to judge how long your own supplies will last.

There are probably billions of humans but because of the size of the megastructure communities are so spread out that essentially everyone is living a scavenger existence. Every community is probably a generation or two of failing utterly.

If you don't go up or down you can instead go straight and stay on the same level. You can travel so far that it becomes impossible to get back before you die. You're 233 years old.

If you didn't understand some of the lore, let me explain.The Governing Agency are kinda like the mods of the Netsphere, they were designed to help humans connected to the Netsphere but humans with the neccessary genes don't exist anymore. What they can do is very little outside the Netsphere, OG humans were supposed to be the admins.

The Safeguard are the Netsphere's automated defense system, it operates independently of the Governing Agency (thus why they cannot control it) and was originally designed to fight Silicon life (see: Dhomo and Iko), but has gone rogue, now exterminating everything living that lacks the genes.

Silicon creatures are the niggers, are eternally fighting the safeguard and obviously do not want a human with net genes to appear, lest they take control of the situation

NoiSE confuses me.
Was it literal cyber-demons that caused the contagion and made the Safeguard go rogue?

Thus, the Silicon Life have propagated on many Strata of the City and have made it their goal to prevent the Administration from ever regaining control of the City, as it would mean the destruction of their species.
